Last Day To Sign Draft Picks
It's the last day to sign draft picks. Will the Cardinals surprise and sign Freshcorn or Ritchie today?

It would certainly be a welcome surprise, as we never seem to get these "shot in the dark" guys at the end of the draft. Hoping for some Bloom magic!

I'm told there is zero chance that the team will sign either Freshcorn or Ritchie.
Jack Smejkal is still a possibility though.

Freshcorn already stated he's going back to Texas A&M and will probably be a high 1st next draft. Ritchie on the other hand, he's just an all or nothing swinger who isn't MLB material at the moment so unless he magically changes his entire game he's not going to play MLB baseball so really no loss here.

Cards didn't sign their round 19 and 20 college guys. Apparently, left $867k of draft pool funds on the table. Not ideal.

if true, that IRKS me to no end....that's 2 obscure HS picks...easily could've signed them. They'd be lottery tickets, but both could've been signed for $400K apiece
Ughh... I'm irked

Cleveland didn't sign their 2nd round pick, pitcher Logan Schmidt. He's off to LSU. He'll join their rotation, along side William Schmidt who spurned the draft a few years ago.....ironically, they're not related...at all.

Re: Last Day To Sign Draft Picks
In the past the Cardinals have been pretty good at knowing what it would take to sign the players they draft. I find it quite interesting that they didn’t know, or at least thought they could change these guys’ minds. As another Poster stated there had to be others that could have been signed. Anyway you look at, the Cardinals messed this up, either they bungled it all up, or it was intentional.

Re: Last Day To Sign Draft Picks
If you look at the Cardinals' track record with paying draft picks well over slot, the track record is quite abysmal. I don't understand how the team can be so bad at scouting high school and college sophomore players compared to other teams.
Here's the draft picks I found from 2017-2022 that the Cardinals paid well over slot. Perhaps Joshua Baez will pan out, but I'm not expecting his career to go that way. The only player in the list worth the over slot money to me is Masyn Winn.
2022
Max Rajcic +$330k
2021
Joshua Baez +$910k
Zane Mills +$103k
Gordon Graceffo +$146.3k
Alex Willis +$788.5k
2020
Masyn Winn +$760k
Ian Bedell +$331k
2019
Tre Fletcher +290k
2018
Mateo Gil +$312.4k
Steven Gingery +$378.1k
2017
Zach Jackson +$156.5k
Chase Pinder +$100.3k
Donivan Williams +$300k
Terry Fuller +$200k

The teams are allowed to use 5% over their budget pool. Not clear if the $867k includes that extra allowed spending or not. Either way, most teams do use the 5% and some teams automatically use it every year. It's an inexpensive way to build a strong farm system, and one would expect the Cards intended to use the full allowance this year.

5% of $16,612,300 is $815,615.JohnTudor1985 wrote: ↑27 Jul 2026 21:11 pm The teams are allowed to use 5% over their budget pool. Not clear if the $867k includes that extra allowed spending or not. If $867K left is accurate and includes the 5% buffer, that means the Cardinals left $51,385 on the table from original signing bonus pool.
That means they spent 97% of their original signing bonus pool.
I grunt dissatisfaction with that. But have not reached the irked state. You all are free to vent. I just want my pizza party or steak dinner with the savings..
