Who do they extend, sign next?

With JJ signed, we know they are interested in locking up core players who they value. The myth around the lockout will freeze all future transactions until rectified was debunked.

With that myth being tossed aside who do they sign next (if anyone)?

I think it's going to be someone who isn't necessarily surging right now. Rumors of Walker have been reported, you all know this. I personally think that isn't going happen. With his million-dollar winnings and soon to be marketing deals, I don't see any desperation forcing Walker to sign.

Some on her have mentioned Winn. I think ninr and a few others have been really hot and heavy on him. I personally think he would potentially be a great extension. The prospects of these two locked up the middle build core infrastructure to anchor the infield defense for half a decade potentially.

Soriano is getting ready to hit arb, maybe locking him up through the last 3 years could be a solid move? Fastball velo 81st percentile, chase and whiff 80% percentile as well. Off speed run value ~92 percentile, has a strong secondary pitch. Lock him up at a good rate. He looks like a solid semi long term solution to the pen.

Riley is in the same boat. If the metric and evaluation show upside.

The ONLY one I'd like to see them extend now is the obvious, J. Walker.

But I think he'll believe he's worth more than the Cardinals ($120M/6 years?) and he'll go thru ARB 1-2-3.

These are the only others I'd consider working out an extension w/now:

-McG (turns 27 on 7/8/27') who has five years of control left, but really no need for an extension now.

But if he keeps pitching like this definitely sometime in the next two years.

-Burly (headed into his age 28 season in 2027) who has two years left (ARB 2/3), yes but only on a four years deal.

-Herrera (turns 27 on 6/1/27') who has three years of control, yes I could see a five year deal.

LONG SHOT:
IF he keeps progressing, then would the Cardinals actually consider an 8 year deal for R.R. while he's at Memphis?

No one else even in the conversation for me.


Some would, I wouldn't give Winn a L-T extension, he's got three years of control left.

I'd let him go through ARB 1-2-3 and then re-evaluate.

(There won't be a bidding war for an all glove, weak hitting SS when he hits FA + the Cardinals have drafted a plethora of SS's)

When DeWitt made the statement that he would like to see more extensions in the future, he was specifically speaking within the context of Whetherholt.
Extension targets of 8 years or more will be limited to players in their 1st or 2nd seasons and who have half a decade away from FA.
There is little incentive for a team or a player to agree to a long extension when a player is just a couple of years away from hitting the open market - at which time a quality, healthy player can target a 5+ year contract when in a more favorable leverage situation.
Easy.
Obvious.
Correct.
The exception is some unique circumstances might be starting pitchers.
For example, someone like May who holds a mutual 20M option for 2027, might be interested in something like a 3 year, 54M extension to replace the option year.

RR is a good call! If his bat plays which it clear seems to do, then why not lock him up. What about Condon? If they like this kid as much as it seems, why not try to jump all over him and get him locked into a 8+ year deal?

The only contracts to offer players who havent performed at MLB are ones the players should be smart enough not to take. Also, Winn is not hitting so do not lock yourself into a player you actually may be need to be looking to replace. Just look to another thread, It appears its a good thing no one gave first round pick Chase Davis some long term contract ...

If R.R.'s the hitter, let alone catcher he appears to be, then locking him down ala C. Emerson & a couple of Brewers Pratt & Lara is a smart move.

$60-80M/8 yrs could end up being a bargain............but only if he keeps progressing and reaches Top 5 prospect status in MLB.

No on Condon just yet as he doesn't come w/R.R.'s pedigree, give him two years and see where he stands at that time.
