That Trouba deal is terrible. I forget who was arguing with me that was a good, or necessary, contract. Everyone is entitled to their views but I disagree on that for sure.
The Tuch deal isn't going to age well at all. Good luck with that Caps.
Funny to see Carlsson there. Man did Verbeek screw that up.
And yeah, Petterson, that's a terrible contract. The Oilers, it's almost fake how bad that organization is ran. Like comedy.
Not sure the Carlsson contract belongs on this list nevertheless #4.
95% of everyone thought they would sign him and saw the reasons to do so plus it is still at least possible that it works out in the long run for the Ducks and also because there will be scores of contracts within this same stratosphere due to this very contract....and will they too make the list and be "bad contracts".
Looking at the list, ask yourself if you had to saddle your team with one of them, which of the 10 contracts shown would you take?

Agreed. The thing about the Carlsson contract is that, while it is an overpayment today, in 2 seasons it could very well be the norm for a player of his caliber.

I used to think Grier in San Jose was a pretty clueless GM who just got incredibly lucky with some very high draft picks and then winning the lottery for Stenberg. Then I thought I might be unfair to the guy and maybe he actually is a good GM. But then he does something insane like the Trouba contract. The Marchment deal was pretty stupid too, but not on the same level as Trouba.

He gave up something to get Nurse….unreal. It’s like he’s using the Maple Leaf model of building a team.

My God, I can’t believe I forgot that one! Yeah, Edmonton should have (and probably would have) paid a team to take that awful contract.

I also felt like the Hertl deal was bad, too. He retained on the contract for the remaining 6 years, traded him while he was hurt and threw in a couple 3rd rd picks as well for a 1st and Edstrom who was an OK, not great prospect at the time. I never understood why that deal had to have been made then. There should have been no urgency. Just always looked like McPhee bullied him into a deal.
No way Stephenson should be number 2 on the list. His contract takes him to 37 y/o, but under 7 for a center who plays 19+ minutes a night and in all situations is not terrible. Plus, he is a good skater, so even if he has to move down to a 3rd and then 4th line role as he ages, he’ll still provide value. That deal won’t impact them signing anyone in the future either. Overpaid, sure. 2nd worst deal in the league…not even close. Bad list overall too.
Assuming The Athletic will come out with "The 10 Best Contracts in he NHL" list. If so, does Thomas's contract make it & what about Parayko's? If not in the top ten, then certainly still very good contracts.
And a year or two from now, are Broberg & Holloway's contracts in that top ten. I have a feeling they will be. Excellent long term deals for these four players in light of the current salary situations & cap considerations.
I wanted the Blues to sign Chandler Stephenson till I saw the contract Seattle gave him. I thought that was a bad contract the moment it was signed. I thought the same thing with ROR in NSH, but that one seemed to work out ok for them.
