Clint Hurdle - Playa!

Post by 10CWilliams »

I saw a story today about what a prospect Clint Hurdle was for the Royals. Even had a cover of SI. I vaguely remember him being on the Cardinals for a day or two.

Does anyone know what happened to his playing career? Was he just a 4A player? His career stats aren't overwhelming but he did have a 106 OPS+.

Well, that'll do it.

My son is a camp counsellor this summer and one of his cabinmates is Darryl Strawberry's grandson. I told him under no circumstances is he to use any talcum powder offered by any of his cabin mates.

Drafted in 1st round (9th) in 1975. I don't know if he had a drinking problem or like a lot 1st rounders just didn't have what it took. Here's a link to the 1975 draft (1st round and few extras). In the 1st round the only two names I remember are Hurdle and Rick Cerone. Of the 8 guys above him, only 3 made the MLB. Only one (Cerone) had a better career.

Danny Goodwin was drafted first overall in 1971 and 1975. Absolutely crazy stat; even crazier he was a total bust. Dale Berra is the only name not mentioned I knew, and that was only from his cocaine problems with the ‘85 Pirates.

If it's the same Hurdle he had a second career managing the Rockies and maybe Pittsburgh? I don't know if drinking would help or hurt in that job.

75 draft, second round Lee Smith, third Carney Landsford, fourth Jason Thompson. Later picks Andre Dawson and Dave Stewart. In the 21st round the Mets selected John Tudor.

He was a cheap scum manager with the Pirates. Was the worst head hunter in the league. Pittsburg always lead the league in HBP under his reign.
