Who are the Blues Targeting if they TRADE UP?

Post by a smell of green grass »

Who are the Blues Targeting if they TRADE UP? My guess is that they only do it if their guy is available still. Here is my ranked listing.

McKenna? Stenberg? I don't think so. However, it wouldn't surprise me either.

Maholtra? #1

Reid? #2

Rudolf? #3

Carels? #4

draft day trade ups of that magnitude don't happen. They might be able to trade up 2 or 3 spots... maybe

Unless there are some real surprises and some guys fall, I would think that Malhotra, Reid and Carels are gone by 5-6. Don’t think they would pay to trade that high, nor do I see many teams (maybe SJ or CHI for an overpay) moving out of those slots.

Rudolph is the guy I would want and hope he slides a bit. If he falls to 7-9, look to Seattle, Winnipeg or Florida for a more reasonable trade. All those teams could be looking for NHL players in addition to just picks, so there could be potential.

I completely agree with you. I doubt it as well. However, Army said that he feels that we can trade up into the TOP5.... So maybe he knows something, or maybe it is part of some larger deal (e.g. Thomas).

I'm a heat-seeking missile for a TOP5 pick. Once I'm lit, I can't help myself.

I would have guessed 0-5% chance that it happens. However, Army said that he feels that it is possible.

The team that would move out of the pick may be SJ. I'd be happy to get any of the top players. I ranked them based on what I think the Blues are targeting, which is not necessarily what I would pick.

Army said that according to their GM shared value list, they have the equity with the top 2 picks to get into 4 or 5. Whether a team will want to make that trade is the different story. But the GM's all have a shared value chart that they use that they created to make trading more clear and fluid.

The one that is leaked to the public is probably pretty similar as those things aren't really hidden secrets, just they would like to act like it's inhouse to that arm chair GM's can't critique every single situation.

to trade to 4 value is 531.65 to trade to 5 value is 484.40. the Blues value at 11 and 15 are 338.98 and 284.29 That gets them to 623.27. Ironically the 3rd pick is valued at 602.54. if that team was San Jose, I think trades would happen pretty easily. If San Jose decides they really don't want a winger and choose a D and shock everyone, I could also see Vancouver requesting all 3 of the Blues 1st as they are in dire straits. Chicago will take whatever the best young player they can so getting past 4 isn't likely.

The Avs are likely to get to the cup so they are either going to be 30 or 31 (am I right on this because of the draft shenanigans?) so the value of all 3 picks for the Blues comes out to 762+. The 2nd pick is valued at 726.59 for context. The Blues have the ammunition to get into the top 5. As others have posted, it's notoriously hard to get a taker for that.

National media is saying it might be easier than ever to make that kind of move this year. I just think there are road blocks. The Blackhawks are a road block because they need to shed some of their prospect pool soon, and the Rags are likely a roadblock as they would want star power in New York if it was possible but their team stinks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I thought each team created their own list. I would be surprised if all 32 GMs agreed on draft pick values, in a vacuum without knowing how the draft actually shook out. Especially since each team is going to value different players differently. So what Army thinks may not be shared by the teams actually in the top 5. Especially when the dominoes start to fall on draft day.

You have the Avs pick mostly correct, barring a comeback by the Wild. Ottawa has #32 because of the punishment from the Dadanov deals. Cup winner gets #31. Cup loser gets #30. If the Avs fail to make the Final then they’ll have #29 and the other conference final loser will have #28. IF the Wild somehow win 3 straight then the Avs will have #27, but I wouldn’t hold your breath.

I'm sure each team has their own value based off each individual draft and how they are ranking their players. But it has been said in a roundabout way by army, and I have heard it from others as well, that the GM's have a group text, and in that group text they have working models to help alleviate constraints on doing business. Essentially, if you can't be trusted, you get blackballed in that group text. But I have heard them talk about how it pertains to the draft and how you move up and down, and they use the working model so that everyone can make trades a little more fluidly. And that is why you hardly ever see the big move forward because that requires a different value proposition than say 28 to 25 where you can just kick in a 3rd round pick and make a quick move.

So yes, there is a generic template. All sports use the a generic template. Each individual year has it's own Biases based off which teams are valuing what more. That's a given. That is what their scouting department is for. But you have to have a generic rubric otherwise the ability to make trades is basically a who you know and who you will do business with. Which already happens but isn't good for the league health overall.

I think Vancouver is in a really good spot even though they lost out on McKenna. They are going to get one of Stenberg or Reid. I wouldn’t give that up just for the 11th and then likely just two average NHL’ers with the later picks

Hey dummy!

My guess is the Blues will be active i have doubts they make picks with #11, #15 and #31.

#11+#15 to move up?

Pick at #11, #15 + for a center?

#15+#31 to move up to #12-#14 to get a guy they like?

Idk but something is going to happen. Im sure they would like to grab Ivar, Malhotra if possible and may be willing to absorb some pain to do it

I just meant they are directionless. They heard 3 different stories in 2 weeks from their ownership. It looks like they finally committed to the total teardown and then you hear "we aren't that bad." It's a tricky situation for them in my opinion. I'd be trying to get off of Buium EP the forward while they have value. If their team doesn't get better, Buium's value goes down. The worry with EP is that they want a center back.

Do you wait until draft day? What about targeting Calgary or Seattle for a pre-Draft trade? You do it thinking that no matter how it breaks you're going to get one of a couple of guys you think are worth that sort of move.
