Waste pitches and a game foolishly given away.
To quote me (who better?) from just yesterday,
"the Cardinals (far from being the only team), have a ridiculous and highly counterproductive habit of intentionally calling "waste" pitches well outside the zone (either in the dirt or a foot outside)."
And less than 24 hours after that brilliant insight, that habit just cost them a game which was nearly impossible to lose.
Two "waste pitches" in the 9th gifted the Padres with 2 runs, and another "waste pitch" in the 10th gifted the winning run.
Amazingly stupid habit on the part of the Cardinals.
And amazing how good I am at understanding this stuff.

Intentionally calling 2 pitches a foot or more outside the zone, thereby putting a .192 hitter in a gift full count situation in which he knew, and every person in the stadium knew, and every person watching on television knew, was going to be a belt high fastball on the inner half, is stupidity on steroids.
And then they did it again in the 10th.
This stuff ain't hard.

What really hurt the tatis at bat was the first pitch that was a strike but because pages of course couldn’t catch it was called a ball and they didnt get a chance to challenge it. Pages is awful at catching the ball he hurts the team constantly by not being able to catch the ball and he sucks at hittingMelville wrote: ↑10 May 2026 18:18 pmI called the HR before it happened.TopofthePerch wrote: ↑10 May 2026 18:13 pm A bloop and a homer on a pitch up to a guy that has 250 career home runs. agree here Mel. Waste pitches well outside the zone don't accomplish anything. Umpired amature basball at many levels for years. Typical pattern for young pitches and amature coaches on 1/2 counts was, first a not close, totallly wasted pitch for (2/2), then miss closely (3/2), yell at me for not getting the call, get mad and overthrow the fastball for ball 4. Happend a lot. Unless a good control pitcher can miss the zone with an enticing enough pitch to get the batter to chase, the wasted pitch is just that- wasted.

0-2 on Castellanos and they throw a sweeper in the dirt at least a foot away from the zone.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑10 May 2026 18:27 pmWhat really hurt the tatis at bat was the first pitch that was a strike but because pages of course couldn’t catch it was called a ball and they didnt get a chance to challenge it. This stuff ain't hard.
Three pitches later, on a 1-2, they did it again.
Two stupid, unnecessary pitches that the pitcher, the catcher, and the .192 batter all knew were never intended to be competitive.
After missing on a fastball, the count was full.
Everyone knew what was coming.
HUGE advantage to the hitter.
He fouled off the next fastball in the middle of the plate.
And then the third straight fastball, forced by the 2 stupidly intentionally wasted pitches, was a meatball on the inner half which might as well have been placed on a tee - and the hitter was of course sitting on it.
Intentionally throwing 2 non-competitive, non-serious pitches put the pitcher in a zero margin for error situation.
Dumb, dumb, dumb.
Folks, this stuff ain't hard.

What is more dumb is having a catcher who cant catch the ball this stuff aint hardMelville wrote: ↑10 May 2026 18:39 pm0-2 on Castellanos and they throw a sweeper in the dirt at least a foot away from the zone.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑10 May 2026 18:27 pmWhat really hurt the tatis at bat was the first pitch that was a strike but because pages of course couldn’t catch it was called a ball and they didnt get a chance to challenge it. I wasn't watching the game but was following on the MLB live feed. Seemed like O’Brien was super sharp. One strike away from winning. Looks like fantastic pitches that were hit.

No. Don’t use that silly graphic to judge pitches.Galatians221jb1 wrote: ↑10 May 2026 18:59 pm https://x.com/stl_stats_facts/status/20 ... 40310?s=46

The Cards give away quite a few games! Lousy offense only 3 hits!
