Walker had good day at the plate today
Roped a single and later hit a ball 106 mpn 377 ft to CF into the wind that the CF caught near the track .
What worked for Walker today ?
He was just reacting today . He wasn't 'thinking' at the plate.
In Goold's article postgame, Walker had this quote.
"I think for me it’s going to be mental," he said after the win. "I’m working so hard on things and movements and when to go, but what’s best in the game is to just go hit the ball. Today, I told myself whatever happens.
"I tried my best to just shut my brain off and really just react."

Many times in previous posts , I mentioned Walker's issues were more 'mental' rather than 'physical'. In any high level sport, a player's success is more mental than physical whether it's hitting a baseball , hitting a golf ball , etc. As the great golf instructor Harvey Penick taught his top students that went to PGA tour (Crenshaw, Kite ) , 'just let it happen' was Harvey's key words to those players. It's when you clutter your mind 'thinking' is when you dont do your best . Relax, address the ball, and hit it ! Let your subconscious take over the physical elements.
Today , Walker did that successfully .
Now the question can he keep that same approach .. Don't think .. just do !

It’s sad a single and a walk is considered a good day at the plate for him. At least he recognizes its mental though. When he gets to two strikes you know what will happen he will call time out step out think about it then step back in and stare at a fast ball down the middle or swing at a sweeper 6ramfandan wrote: ↑20 Mar 2026 20:19 pm Roped a single and later hit a ball 106 mpn 377 ft to CF into the wind that the CF caught near the track .

Doesn't matter. He should not be going north.

Today was nothing to get excited about. He should not start in RF.

I'm still and believer with this young ball player. Good kid. I hope this is the year he figures it out. If not , he may be in a new uniform next season.

Re: Walker had good day at the plate today
Glad you brought up the point about when when Walker steps out on the two strike count . When you said he will step out , THINK ABOUT IT ( I put that in caps as that is what I would like to know ) What exactly does he think about during that timeout . If a player steps out, adjusts his gloves, takes a few deep breaths /exahling to relax returning to the batter's box that is good BUT if he is mentally thinking what pitch will he throw here , what pitch will I take vs swing at He is in BIG trouble.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑20 Mar 2026 21:15 pmIt’s sad a single and a walk is considered a good day at the plate for him. Unsure if Walker works with any sports psychologist but he sure seems like an athelte who could use one. Many athletes do .. For example, the great tennis player Martina Navratilova had Dr. James Loehr work with her .. relaxation , mental focus, etc. In golf , a famous guy there was Dr. Bob Rotella he worked with several guys on the PGA tour with their mental game. especially putting .. what the golfer should be concentrating on, visualizng , etc. Learning what to concentrate on and what NOT to let get in your head.
Note: There are athletes who get advice from sports psychologists who don't want that mentioned as then media etc. will ask the athlete what is he working with you on, this and that . That adds to the players mental problems often , so its kept pretty low key .
In my 30's I did a lot of tournament bowling and got into sports psychology books etc. Learning the mental tips to perfrom well in sports were beneficial in my bowling. I was close to pursuing a Masters degree program in Sports Pschology in the 70's Standford offered a program in that however I would have had to given up my day job and travel across the country . I was married and two young kids . So I just kept reading and learning . Some top pro bowlers told me what mental thoughts they had when making crucial shots for big $$$ in competition. Used that myself as well.

You gotta start somewhere and go up from there. For Walker , he's starting from the basement and has a way to get just getting to the first floor.

Mark McGuire's approach as a hitter and a hitting coach was block everything out of your mind and let your natural abilities take over. I always liked that approach and maybe Big Mac needs to have a conversation with Walker.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑20 Mar 2026 21:15 pmIt’s sad a single and a walk is considered a good day at the plate for him. In golf its the same way.
Maybe it's keeping the shoulder structure closed a little bit longer or maybe drop the arms vertically initially working on this drills in isolation.
But once you hit the range and most certainly the course you need to go lizard brain. Let the brain do what it does best, predict and reorganize.

So baseball isn't a mental game. Go with the flow. Now if all those robotic stat gurus who feel compelled to throw a bunch of gibberish at you would kindly depart the scene, real fans can once again enjoy the HUMAN game of baseball.

I remember listening to Jack Buck tell about Willie McGee. Willie was struggling at the time and then he broke out of it. Buck asked him what he did to break out of his slump and he said something to the effect of "See the ball and hit it." Simplifying things sometimes fixes the problem. One time either Buck or one of the others said that Willie's philosophy was "Thou shalt not pass!"
