Th’ Academy - your prefs

Post by MikoTython »

I’ve only seen a few of the nominees, but here is my descending assessment of overall merit :

Sentimental Value
One Battle After Another
Tie
The Secret Agent, and
Sinners

Wish I’d seen more - A very interesting Iranian Directed/themed film I saw last nite - It was just an accident. To me a better version of The Secret Agent.

I get an over-hyped vibe about Sinners.

I don't love any of these movies, but here's the order I'd rank them:

Sinners
Marty Supreme
Train Dreams
The Secret Agent
Sentimental Value
Hamnet
One Battle
Bugonia
Frankenstein

Didn't see F1.

I would never dare speak for you but I am confident you would rank F1 at the bottom of the list. Other than being very visually and audio pleasing it’s a cliche riddled sports movie. I would rank it somewhere between Youngblood and The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh in the all time sports movie rankings and am baffled that it’s a best pic nomination.

Since the Academy failed to even nominate the best movie of the year, 'Eddington', just hoping 'Sirat' gets recognized with Best International Feature or Best Sound.

Sirat definitely deserves best sound. (And it has the most suspenseful moments of the year.)

Eddington was better than most of the nominees.

and SInners......denied.

Pretty much all safe bets with the Academy this year. No surprises or upsets and I don't think any undeserving winners....except for F1 in Best Sound.

Did appreciate the closing gag with Conan getting his office for Lifetime Host.

I don't think OBAA was BP + Director level of good but there also wasn't anything else obviously better. I thought they'd split the two and give BP to Sinners.

I also think any actor except Leo did a more challenging performance than Jordan.

I was okay with the In Memoriam... three absolute legends died... not sure Streisand was the best choice to speak on Redford though.

The sinners song performance was amazing. I get why KPop song one but it's definitely not the "best" song.

The only real cringe part was not letting the Non-white people finish their acceptance speech... the only group that faced a hard cutoff. Bad look.

Yeah, just awful for the winners. Especially after the Bridesmaid cast got 5 minutes to do brutally unfunny schtick that should not be at the Helium comedy club on a Thursday night let alone on the stage of the Oscars. They need to fix this (bleep). Presenters should come out and if they have something serious to say about the category, the history of the same, the nominees, etc, they get no more than a minute (and 30 seconds should be fine) to say what needs to be said and move on. The gags, the goofs, the feeble attempts at lame (donkey) comedy are ridiculous.

On an unrelated note I thought the Jonas Brother wife was going to punch Javier Bardem in the spleen after he gave his "no war Free Palestine" comment. He's been very vocal about this, no idea why this surprised her.

Methinks someone inside the show production responsible for scheduling the presenters was either having fun at her expense, or actively out to get her.

Every Oskar ceremony, esp. during a war, requires its Brando/Littlefeather moment. Its de rigeur. These never go over completely boffo. You're gonna get some side or even (IDF lady) front eye.

Amazing that this was PTA's first. Actually, he won the trifecta.

Pretty ho-hum night, no real shockers. I was mainly watching baseball, and would go back just to see what they were awarding next. I think Conan is the best host for any of these award shows, period. Dude is just funny, and odd, and just knows what he is doing up there. The closing gig was pretty great as well.
