Ramon Urias

Post by cardinalsfever44 »

Per Jeff Jones on X:

Sources say free agent INF Ramón Urías met with the Cardinals today and is closing in on a deal. Originally signed by St. Louis as a free agent from Mexico, the 31 year old righty had 11 HR and a .675 OPS for Baltimore and Houston in 2025.

The Cardinals and infielder Ramón Urías are closing in on a deal, reports Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-[political party]. The details of the contract being discussed haven’t yet been reported.

More to come.

That’s exciting. Just enough to put the Cards in contention.

Seems like a solid player with position flexibility?
If he is signed.....it’ll be interesting how he fits with Fermin & Saggese also available?

Well.... why? Saggese and Fermin not going to cut it as MI / util in 2026??

They had and waived Ramos. It'd be funny if Zack Kent got waived again. They'll probably put an injured pitcher on the 60 day IL

He was a 2.2 WAR player last year that plays 2B and 3B and won a gold glove in 2022.

Thanks 44 for digging up the upside potential that Bloom is looking for. That ceiling isn’t always visible. Appreciate the research.

I’d keep Kent and give Roycroft a mop, bucket, wringer, and Janitor overalls.

more from MLBTR:

Urías, 32 in June, has been a solid multi-positional player for the past six big league seasons. Most of that time was spent with the Orioles, though he was traded to the Astros at last year’s deadline. He has stepped to the plate 1,856 times in the majors, roughly three full seasons’ worth, and hit 50 home runs in that time. His .257/.321/.403 batting line translates to a 104 wRC+, indicating he’s been 4% above average on the whole.

His defense is even stronger than his offense. He has mostly played third base but has also spent some time at the other infield positions. He’s probably stretched as a shortstop but he has received strong reviews for his work at the hot corner. He won the American League Gold Glove at that position in 2022, getting credited with 14 Defensive Runs Saved and eight Outs Above Average.

Ramón Urías (5'10", 185 lbs) is a dependable, right-handed utility infielder known for high-end defensive versatility, particularly at third base where he won a 2022 Gold Glove. With 6+ years of MLB experience (2020–2025), he provides solid contact hitting, respectable power, and a high baseball IQ, offering roughly 3+ WAR per 162 games.

Defensive Profile
Elite Utility: Primarily plays 3B, but capable at 2B, SS, and 1B.
Gold Glove Caliber: Won the 2022 AL Gold Glove for third base with 14 Defensive Runs Saved.
Range/Arm: Above-average defender with good instincts; ranked in the 87th percentile in Outs Above Average.
Improvements: Showed major improvements with the glove through 2025, posting a +3 Run Fielding Value (75th percentile).

Offensive Profile
Contact/Approach: Solid contact hitter with a manageable strikeout rate (around 16-17% in top seasons) and a respectable eye at the plate.
Power: Primarily a gap-to-gap hitter with the ability to pull for home runs. Increased his flyball rate in recent seasons to enhance power, posting a .237 ISO in 2018 (Mexico) and maintaining good power numbers in MLB.
Consistency: A career 104-105 wRC+ hitter who is generally consistent against both RHP and LHP, often acting as a reliable starter or elite utility player.

Scouting Summary
Urías profiles as a high-IQ, veteran utility player who can start regularly. He has transitioned from a fringe prospect into a reliable big-league regular with elite infield defense. His ability to hit for average and play multiple spots effectively makes him highly valuable.
Key 2025 Performance Data
Fielding: 87th percentile in Outs Above Average.
Value: 3.3 WAR average per 162 games.
Utility: Played all four infield spots, with elite performance at 3B

I wonder if they plan on giving Saggese much more of a look in the OF?
He is “ok” defensively in the IF but Urias like you said is clearly much better!!

Saggese is probably thinking, "there goes some of my playing time"
(which is probably true)

The only way this move makes any sense is if they want saggese to play every day so will send him to Memphis otherwise it makes zero sense

Career .257 hitter. Man, the definition of hitting for average really has changed.
