1st and 3rd base coaches will be required to stay in coaching boxes ...

Post by ramfandan »

prior to the pitcher throwing a pitch. During the past five years, coaches have been moving up and down the foul lines trying to get enhanced view of how a pitcher may be gripping the ball and then relay the type pitch to the batter directly or indirectly to a base runner on 2nd who then relays the pitch to the batter (pitch tipping ).
This new enforcement was passed 2 days ago by MLB. Umps seeing a violation will warn the 1st and/or 3rd base coach of the violation and subsequent violations could result in ejection. Coaches may move out their respective coaching boxes once the pitch is delievered.
This came to a head in last year's playoffs .. Blue Jays/ Yankees series .

This is a good rule change. You can see this at every level of play. In fact, I taught my HS catchers to show coaches who were getting out of the box to steal pitches their signs. While that coach was signaling what they saw, the catcher was using his glove placement to let the pitcher know what pitch to throw. My teams would crack up seeing the other team try to signal pitches to the hitter. Can you imagine looking for a curveball and an up and in fastball goes past your chin?
