Genuinely asking...If Soriano was on waivers they couldnt just claim him like they did with Ramos? Pick up Soriano, option Granillo and drop one of those 3 who offer less potential and ceiling than Gran.
Was there something personal about Granillo they didnt like?
Are guys like Raquet, Pushard, Roycroft that locked in to keep on the 40??

They saw something they liked in Soriano and don't see Granillo with a future on this team. Another team likely snags up Soriano on waivers before the Cards get a chance, so they make the deal. Easy as that.
I don't understand all the heartburn over losing a guy like Granillo. Dude gave up over a hit an inning last year and posted a 4.71 ERA with a 1.38 WHIP and struck out 7 batters per 9 innings. Nothing special at all.

As my birdie in the backyard explained,

It makes no sense...nobody wanted this garbage.
This is the fourth time he has changed organizations since November.
He landed with Baltimore, Atlanta and Washington via successive waiver claims and designations.
A veteran of parts of three seasons, Soriano has an earned run average just under 6.00 over 118 big league innings. He has a league average 22% strikeout rate against a moderately concerning 10.3% walk percentage. The biggest issue is that he has been very homer-prone, surrendering 1.75 longballs per nine innings. Soriano works in the 95-96 mph range with his sinker and four-seam fastball while using a slider and changeup fairly frequently. He’s out of minor league options and either needs to break camp or be sent back into DFA limbo.
It’s surprising that the Cardinals parted with Granillo for a pitcher who was waived three times in an offseason. They’re evidently not bullish on Granillo’s chances of translating his Triple-A production into success at the highest level. It’s also worth noting that they never had an opportunity to grab Soriano off waivers.
At least Granillo still had 2 options left.

Facts, not fawning
Oh my god, I stated that I thought they probably saw something they liked in a pitcher, and they traded a true legend in Granillo to get him, so that means I'm fawning all over the new GM.

Re: So why Granillo, and not guys like Raquet, Pushard, Roycroft???
The thing most people are ignoring is the years of control! With all the trades that have been made, one of the arguments for these moves were the years of control that they gave the Cardinals. Now, that is being ignored. A real argument can be made as to which player is a better pitcher moving forward. I happen to believe Granillo will be, but regardless, he has remaining options and several years yet of control. No matter how you dice it, this trade makes no sense unless…..Granillo ruffled some feathers some how.
He did come across as somewhat arrogant And opinionated. Perhaps he said something that the Cardinals brass didn’t like.
It would be interesting to know, for sure what the “ real “ reason for this trade was!

Spot on. He must fit a profile or they see something that their pitching analytics guys like . How about we trust their judgment on this one? Is the sky really falling over the loss of Andre Granillo? God forbid we trade Packy Naughton.cardinalsfever44 wrote: ↑11 Feb 2026 15:21 pm They saw something they liked in Soriano and don't see Granillo with a future on this team. Never seen anyone post about Granillo before he was traded but now people are panicking over what is going to end up being a nothing trade of two nobodies.
