Frankly, I don't see an obvious choice. Maybe infielders Gorman and Saggese could be possibilities.

I believe that the premise of the OP is that Burleson is the regular starting first baseman, not a backup.kscardsfan wrote: ↑08 Feb 2026 11:44 am Maybe Burleson? His defense is weak but ok for a backup at first base. Other than DH no other spot for him.
Some people think that they are actually going to compete this year...NYCardsFan wrote: ↑08 Feb 2026 11:41 am Ah, yes, the burning question of who will be the backup 1B on a team in a rebuild . . .
Agree, but that's a problem if Burly is your #1. Bad memories of other Dr. Stonegloves at 1B like Jose Martinez, Pedro Guerrero and Greg Jefferies.sp25 wrote: ↑08 Feb 2026 11:55 amI believe that the premise of the OP is that Burleson is the regular starting first baseman, not a backup.kscardsfan wrote: ↑08 Feb 2026 11:44 am Maybe Burleson? I wonder if those folks would be interested in some ocean front property?Jeff Goldblum wrote: ↑08 Feb 2026 12:06 pmSome people think that they are actually going to compete this year...NYCardsFan wrote: ↑08 Feb 2026 11:41 am Ah, yes, the burning question of who will be the backup 1B on a team in a rebuild . . .

from what I saw, Burleson was actually quite good with the glove there. Martinez and Guerrero were brutalClassicO wrote: ↑08 Feb 2026 12:08 pmAgree, but that's a problem if Burly is your #1. But as others have said, the starter at 1B, much less the back-up, is only one of a myriad of problems.
Well we know this much, if Stubby spends a good deal of time on the shelf, we can pretty well write off this year!NYCardsFan wrote: ↑08 Feb 2026 12:38 pm Who is the backup at 1B coach for the Cardinals presently?
Frankly, I don't see an obvious choice. Maybe coaches Jay and Allen could be possibilities.
