Who is the back up at 1B for the Cardinals presently?

Post by Shady »

Frankly, I don't see an obvious choice. Maybe infielders Gorman and Saggese could be possibilities.

If I were a betting man, I would say that they're buying Gorman, or Ivan a 1b mitt.

Ah, yes, the burning question of who will be the backup 1B on a team in a rebuild . . .

Maybe Burleson? His defense is weak but ok for a backup at first base. Other than DH no other spot for him.

I believe that the premise of the OP is that Burleson is the regular starting first baseman, not a backup.

Some people think that they are actually going to compete this year...

Agree, but that's a problem if Burly is your #1. Bad memories of other Dr. Stonegloves at 1B like Jose Martinez, Pedro Guerrero and Greg Jefferies.

But as others have said, the starter at 1B, much less the back-up, is only one of a myriad of problems.

I wonder if those folks would be interested in some ocean front property?

And that's the subtle joke of the post you responded to.

What a worthless question but I'll give a serious answer. Gorman, Ivan, Pages, Pozo, and Crooks have all played a little 1B. Pozo has the most experience (88 games all but one in the minors). Then there is whoever plays 1B in Memphis and Springfield. Shady, backup 1st basemen are everywhere.

Look around, do a little (for once just do a litte) research. Justin Turner is still a FA, so are Hoskins, Wilmer Flores, Ty France and the list goes on.

Who is the backup at 1B coach for the Cardinals presently?

Frankly, I don't see an obvious choice. Maybe coaches Jay and Allen could be possibilities.

from what I saw, Burleson was actually quite good with the glove there. Martinez and Guerrero were brutal

Well we know this much, if Stubby spends a good deal of time on the shelf, we can pretty well write off this year!
