A hypothetical I know.. I asked as it was my opinion that had Donovan not been traded he would have tested 'free agency' after 2027 season and
would not have signed an extension to remain with Cardinals .. that he was two years and gone ( unless Cardinals had traded him in the interim ).
Mariners are a contending type team right now so Donovan may want to remain there but also may want to see what the big market cities ( LA , NY ) might dangle for $$$ for him in free agency at conclusion of 2027.
PS Donovan currently lives on rural farm property in Fairhope, Alabama where he has 'the Bardn' his own training facility building where he trains in offseason. Hard to say where geographically he may like to play in MLB or if that even makes a difference for him as he has the private rural retreat n the offseason for his family.
Does anyone think Donovan will play more than 2 years at Seattle ?

Too many variables to guess. He may fall in love with the city. They may offer him a good contract and he decides to re-up. Maybe Bloom has built a good team and he wants to come back. I think currently Atlanta wouldn't be a bad bet for him, as it takes him closer to home if he does indeed reach free agency.

Do players like playing in Seattle? I can't think of too many career Mariners, although Griffey and Ichiro did return to retire.
Also, no state income tax, which puts it on a more level field with Texas.

I almost think that he'll need to be extended in order to stay.
Similar to his St. Louis situation in that regard with another future
2B right behind him and being on a team that doesn't
pay for 2B. Polanco left after a better than Donnie season.
He also needs to stay healthier than his 3 year average.
Which has been Noot like over the last 3 seasons.

I don’t know if he would have signed an extension but Bernie said in one of his videos that the cardinals had approached him about an extension but it never got out of the preliminary stages of negotiation. He didn’t clarify what that meant it could have meant cards asked if he wanted to negotiate an extension and he said no he wants to test free agency or if the cards approached him with their top extension offer and it was too low and he said no so they decided to trade him since that was going to be their top offer who knowsramfandan wrote: ↑06 Feb 2026 13:32 pm A hypothetical I know.. No state income tax in Washington for now, but they have a large deficit and the state pols are rattling their sabers talking about starting one.

He’s got basically one chance at a big free agent deal after 2 years. I’d bet he’s gone unless Seattle offers a big extension.
