Valdez to Tigers
3 for $115,000,000 per MLB Trade Rumors
Re: Valdez to Tigers
These numbers are getting crazier and crazier. In what world is Valdez worth 38.3 million per year?

Wow. How big of a smile do you think Paul Skenes has right now. Which team ends up paying him 50 per? Sadly for the game of baseball, it won't be the Pirates.

Why is it sad? Funny CT thinks teams pay too much but the Cardinals pay too little.RamFan08NY wrote: ↑05 Feb 2026 00:41 am Wow. How big of a smile do you think Paul Skenes has right now. Which team ends up paying him 50 per? Sadly for the game of baseball, it won't be the Pirates.

Re: Valdez to Tigers
I'm trying to square the same team telling 2 consecutive CYA winner Tarik Skubal he's not worth his asking price in arbitration turning around and giving Framber Valdez $38M AAV. Doesn't compute.

Sad because Pittsburg use to be a fun baseball city. You remember the Pirate teams of the 70s. A lot of fun.Cardinals1964 wrote: ↑05 Feb 2026 00:54 amWhy is it sad? Unfortunately, Pitt won't be able to afford Skenes. A lot of this blame goes to the Pirate fans. It doesn't matter how good the Steelers are, they pack the house. But Pirate fans won't show up unless the team is winning (sound familiar?). A lot to do with having only 8 home game to go to, compared to 81.
Re: Valdez to Tigers
I wonder how Skubal feels seeing Valdez get this money when the Tigers have been hassling Skubal in arbitration over him requesting 32m and they only offered 19m
Re: Valdez to Tigers
That's a lot of $$$ for him, no wonder he was still a free agent. Is he a Scott Boras client? That being said, this is a good fit for both Framber and the Tigers.
Re: Valdez to Tigers
He's put up 16.5 fWAR the last four years, and was a 4.0 fWAR pitcher last year. A "win" is worth about $10M on the open market. Most of the time FAs sign long deals which include most of their decline phase so teams are buying "cheap" years of lower production to bring the AAV down. $115M is worth about 11.5 WAR over three years (maybe less if there's inflation). He's projected for 3.6 or so fWAR next year. It's not crazy to think he could put up 9, 10, 11, even 12 fWAR over those three seasons. The Tigers might have paid a small premium to avoid having to add extra years, plus this is exactly the type of player that adds tremendous value in a short post season series.
$20M is like the new $10M from just a few years ago, even average SPs are getting that much. $25-30M is the asking price for good but not great players. Elite players get $30+M, especially on short deals.

Re: Valdez to Tigers
Valdez = Skubal insurance
Skubal "loses" his ARB hearing and gets $19M, then they keep both.
Skubal wins his ARB cases and gets $32M, then he's dealt to.........(Mets', Dodgers, Jays, ?????).

Re: Valdez to Tigers
I don't disagree with you at all, that with the current metrics, he is worth it, as you say he is. I was referring more to the nature of these metrics, and I just don't think that it cannot continue to escalate, unchecked. The bow will eventually break, and if so, baseball will destroy itself as there will be absolutely only a handful of teams that are able to compete on a yearly basis. No one wants to watch a sporting event, with the final outcome, basically already predetermined . Only a few teams will be able to realistically compete for the title, unless something dramatically changes. When a Valdez is getting nearly 40 million and Tucker 60 million, then Houston, we have a problem. Re: Valdez to Tigers
If arbitor picks Tigers $19M over Skubal’s $32M he won’t be smilingscoutyjones2 wrote: ↑05 Feb 2026 07:13 amSkubal is smiling
As the back yo back Cy Young winner Woolf be in ssme clubhouse getting $19M when Framber gets $38M .
Highly doubt in that scenario he will be smiling .
