What does AI have to say

Post by Cardsfan1586 »

Seattle Mariners get
Brendan Donovan (INF/OF) from the Cardinals

St. Louis Cardinals get
Jurrangelo Cijntje (prospect) from the Mariners
Tai Peete (prospect) from the Mariners
Competitive Balance Round B pick #68 from the Mariners
Colton Ledbetter (OF prospect) from the Rays
Competitive Balance Round B pick #72 from the Rays

Tampa Bay Rays get
Ben Williamson (INF) from the Mariners
(And yes — Tampa will need to clear a 40-man roster spot for Williamson.)

Short answer: **the Cardinals** — pretty comfortably.

Longer, funner answer 👇

---

## 🏆 **Winner: St. Louis Cardinals**

**Why?**

* They turn **Brendan Donovan (good, controllable utility guy)** into:

* **Two legit prospects** (Cijntje + Peete)
* **Two Competitive Balance picks** (#68 and #72)
* **Another solid OF prospect** (Ledbetter)

That’s a *lot* of long-term value for a player who’s very useful but not a star. This is classic Cardinals asset-maximizing.

---

## 😐 **Mariners: “win-now, but at a cost”**

**What they get**

* Brendan Donovan fills multiple needs:

* 2B/3B/OF flexibility
* High OBP, contact bat
* Cheap and controllable

**What they give up**

* Cijntje (high-upside arm)
* Peete (athletic upside)
* A valuable CB pick (#68)

If Donovan helps push Seattle into October, this looks fine. If not? Oof. This is a **present-over-future** bet.

---

## 🤷‍♂️ **Rays: small, targeted move**

**What they do**

* Swap **Ledbetter + CB pick #72** for **Ben Williamson**

That’s very Rays-y:

* Williamson is near-MLB ready
* Strong glove, some bat-to-ball
* Fits their churn-the-40-man model

They probably see Williamson as more immediately useful than Ledbetter + a pick, especially if they’re thin on infield depth.

I don't know which AI you use, but the analysis seems objective, balanced and as thorough as possible regarding prospects.
More insightful than a lot of human views of the trade, imo.
Thanks. Keep the AI stuff coming at relevant points in the future

I thought you mean Al

:mrgreen:

The Mad Hungarian would be excited about the dual pitcher
Al from Quantum leap would probably care less, he has bigger things to fix.

Google AI:
Trade Grades (As of February 2, 2026)
Team Grade Key Reasoning
Seattle Mariners A Acquired Brendan Donovan, a versatile All-Star bat with high OBP (.361 career) to anchor a World Series-caliber lineup.
St. Louis Cardinals A- Maximized Donovan's value by landing a massive "rebuild haul" including three prospects and two top-75 draft picks, significantly boosting their farm depth.
Tampa Bay Rays B+ Facilitated the deal to turn a lower-ranked prospect into Ben Williamson, a major-league-ready defensive third baseman.
Impact of the Draft Picks on St. Louis's Grade
The inclusion of Pick #68 (from Seattle) and Pick #72 (from Tampa Bay) shifted the Cardinals' grade from a B+ to a high A-. While draft picks carry inherent risk, these two assets provide critical strategic advantages for a rebuilding franchise:
Bonus Pool Dominance: These picks significantly increase the Cardinals' 2026 bonus pool, allowing them to potentially "over-slot" and sign elite talent that might otherwise fall to later rounds.
Asset Volume: In total, the Cardinals received five high-tier assets for one player:
Jurrangelo Cijntje (SHP, Mariners' No. 7 prospect).
Tai Peete (OF, Mariners' former 1st rounder).
Colton Ledbetter (OF, Rays' prospect).
Pick #68 Overall.
Pick #72 Overall.
Draft Capital: The Cardinals now hold five picks in the top 75 of the upcoming 2026 MLB Draft, giving them arguably the most powerful draft position in the league.

If you did get a 'sure thing' prospect, he would not be a high ceiling one. Donovan is good, but it is only for two years of control AND he makes a good team better and has a strong ability to fill in a hole or holes in the lineup. He will give you a VERY reliable bat and will, complementing a good lineup, but not specifically carry a team he isn't the type to carry a team.

So, the idea a team was going to give away their top prospect was absurd. We got some high upside players, who have a legitimate chance to make the big leagues, but not guaranteed and not guaranteed to be stars, some picks and a lower upside but solid prospect. It could be a really good deal and it could be meh results. I think the odds are that we will get some big league value from our haul. The question is will it be a little, a moderate amount or a lot. There is no guarantee, but it could really pan out well. It's not like Arenado for salary relief and a scratcher ticket or the other deals which had some cost control floor and some lottery tickets, but no super high upside.

Putting Donovan on any team makes them better, hence half the league showed interest. But, once again, he won't carry a team, but he well help a good team to keep rolling.

"Intelligence" which labels itself as "artificial" is likely not a reliable source in evaluating major league baseball.
If you really wanted the opinion of intelligence which is artificial, you could have just as easily asked The Marmot.
