Zach Mortimer to run Cardinals draft replacing Flores

Post by ramfandan »

The @Cardinals have promoted Zach Mortimer to director of amateur acquisitions & he'll run their drafts going forward. A former @baseballpro writer, Mortimer joined the Cards as an area scout in 2013 before rising to regional crosschecker in 2017 & national crosschecker in 2019.

Above attributed to Jim Callis MLB

Mortimer will make his first selection at 13th spot in 2026 MLB draft.

I thought crosschecking was a penalty.

Great....replace the inept Flores with a Flores Minion.

These drafts are (bleep) important in a rebuild. Flores hasn't had a good draft ...maybe ever. 2022 Might be his best....jury still out on the LHP Trio up top, they haven't seen AAA yet. Still waiting on VS2 and Crooks realize their Major League hitting skill.

Haven't drafted and developed a hitter of consequence in 5 or 6 seasons....I don't count Wetherholt, he fell in our laps. And drafting 7th in a Top Heavy Hitters Draft (2024) is like connecting dots or coloring by numbers. Drafting in a very weak college draft (2025), takes some skill and serious choices need to made...jury out on that one for sure.

--------------

The Flores drafts will be remembered by their Themes....stupid way to draft.

sigh....

Not only the JJW fall in our laps but we also could have had Konnor Griffin. Time will tell if that was even the right move.

everyone ahead of us, and 1 team below us could've had Griffin. We aren't the sole member of that club.

Besides....we got the best hitter in the draft. Griffin has the best tools, and he changed his swing and it worked right after the draft. He's going to be an Allstar, just like JJ....just like Kurtz. And probably Burns.....the Reds, Cards, A's aren't kicking themselves in the (donkey) because of Griffin. Now the White Sox and Rockies might be....Hagen Smith looks like a Mathews clone right now....high K's, but high Walks...can't go far in games....Charlie Condon hasn't been bad in the minors, but he hasn't been out of this world either....135 wRC+...that's good at the MLB level, but not much to hang your hat on in High A.....Caglianone hit the hell out of the ball in Springdale (NW Arkansas ~ Texas League), but he loves to chase everything thrown at him, make a mistake in the zone and he crushes it...throw outside the zone and he hits a ground ball, I said that at draft time...the chase rate will get exposed. MLB debut was a bit lacking for Cags. TBF, I expect he'll be a bit better for KC in 2026...how much? Not sure....Bazzana #1 pick in the draft....slow injury go for him and Guardians.

Don't dwell too much on Griffin....we got JJ. I'll take the Future Batting Champion and not feel bad about it.

Makes sense, and its done. But I certainly hope our new drafting strategy can successfully target some true elite MOTO bats/Power hitters. Seems like nearly every other team has 1 or MORE better than our best RBI man right now.

Idk, Bloom isn’t and never has cut corners when it comes to drafting and player development. I’d like to know what kind of impact he made on Bloom to make this decision before I call it a dud move. Mo has been no stranger to not using his personnel to their potential. Could be a guy that just has been held back
