1. Bloom won't be bidding against Free Agent supply. SF just signed another GG outfield bat today. Maybe that takes a little pressure off their roster or uses up some of their "dry powder" lessening their demand for adding Donny as well. But there won't be FA's available in July
2. 4 more months of data on target prospects - What if someone Bloom wants now blows out his arm in April or hits .200 with a 40% K rate in AA? Waiting until July gives us that much more of a track record on every prospect class out there to avoid a mistake and also puts them that much closer to becoming MLB producers from the point they are acquired.
3. 4 more months of evaluating our own prospects. Maybe 2 or more SPs prove themselves in AAA and show they are ready to move up, or do move up and look like the next Michael Wacha? Thus reducing our need for more pitching redundancy at the expense of OF talent. Maybe Walker starts hitting. Or maybe he gets even worse. Or Gorman does one or the other. How does JJW transition to ML? Its 4 more months more of certainty towards knowing what our future producing roster looks like and where major holes still exist.
4. and finally, its 4 months of the young hitters getting to watch BD play hard everyday, and hopefully developing those habits themselves - because they certainly aren't getting the positive mentorship they need from Oli.

Four negatives for waiting are 1. His value will be lower 2. He could be on one of his IL stints at that time 3. Teams wanting him now could have prospects emerge and wont need him 4. Teams that are out of it could be looking to trade their second basemen meaning more are availableCarp4Cy wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 17:50 pm 1. Bloom won't be bidding against Free Agent supply. Good points both ways. The one area that concerns me most is injury risk. An injury that keeps him on IL flips getting good return now vs. nobody offering anything worthwhile come trade deadline.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 19:47 pmFour negatives for waiting are 1. Possibly true. Although we did trade Edman while he was on the DL.ramfandan wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 20:11 pmGood points both ways. The one area that concerns me most is injury risk. And you could make the point that he was injured the last anybody checked so maybe some teams aren’t completely convinced that he’s 100% healthy going into this year
But yeah, you have to weigh the risk of injury versus the seeming reality of us not getting the correct prospect we need if we trade right now

Most likely, there will be no trading next offseason due to the lockout which will likely last from 01 Dec at least until MLB games are threatened in 2027.
If he's hurt at the 2026 deadline or has a slump around that time, you may never get an opportunity to trade him.

Of course the cardinals could trade him while he’s on the IL at the deadline he will just bring back less with less control and being on the IL. I just don’t understand the love some cardinals fans have of waiting until players values have decreased to trade themCarp4Cy wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 20:27 pmPossibly true. Number two-all yes. They will improve.
Number three-??
Number four- not a difference maker.
The four negatives carry as much weight.
