In the case of Hacienda, at one time they had very little competition. They were among the first Mexican restaurants in the St. Louis Area. Basically it was El Serape in midtown, Ruiz in Florissant, and them. Now there is a lot of competition, and most of them are far better than Hacienda.

I'm 80, so not too young to remember! I remember El Serape, on Olive East of Grand, but I don't recall knowing about this one. Thanks for the info.

I wouldn't go so far as to say we were a food diversity desert, but we certainly didn't have the choices we have today. Before the Loop became hip, the only restaurants were Maryland Cafe and a Chinese restaurant near the Tivoli. Other than the lunch counter at Glaser's Drug Store and the hamburger place on the corner of Kingsland and Enright, which later became a Korean place, that was it.

I do miss that place. It came in after Blueberry Hill, when the Loop was just beginning to blossom. Later he moved to Maplewood, but it somehow just wasn't as good.

Are you referring to the Lantern House which had been a bank (and still has the night deposit out front - welded shut), and is currently Fitz's?

No, I'm referring to a time before The Lantern House was there. Lantern House was originally at the corner of Skinker and Delmar, a spot that had been The Coffee Pot. The Chinese restaurant I'm thinking of was near the Tivoli. It might have been called Asia Cafe. I'm going back to the 1950's.
