80's and 90's Norris Division Blues Killers

Post by zuck698 »

This thread is for those of us who have gray hair, if hair at all.

I was thinking back to one of my favorite eras of Hockey. The Norris Division time frame has always been my favorite era in hockey. The old "Chuck Norris" division. Every game was a guaranteed rough and tumble affair. I picked 2 players off each opposing roster that I absolutely despised playing against, but secretly wanted on the Blues roster. For some of the old timers here, who were some of yours?

Dino Ciccarelli and Neal Broten with North Stars.
Wendel Clark and Rick Vaive with Maple Leafs.
Peter Kilma and Darren McCarty with the Wings.
Steve Larmer and Chris Chelios of the Black Hawks

Against Detroit Probert seemed to always have his way with the Blues
Doug Gilmour was another player that always did well against the Blues

Denis Savard and Doug Wilson. Those guys got going in old Chicago stadium and you just knew something bad would happen.

Rick Vaive. Had forgotten about him.

Would have paid a player to pull a Wayne Maki on Ciccarelli.

Hopefully some of you guys watch the Hull and Chase podcast. They did one with Butcher that was hilarious. Bobby Smith, Ron Wilson and Brian Bellows all wore hair pieces back then and the Blues were whistled for being offsides by the North Stars bench. The ref mentioned they were offsides by just a hair, after which Butcher pointed at the Minnesota bench and said “but not your hair.”

Ugh. Garth Butcher. Would gladly have foregone that "wit" to have ronning, mommeso and courtnall back. As valuable as steve ott. "But these guys are good in the room" .

I really don't get why people revere Ron Caron. He made decisions like a kid playing video games.

Hated Draper and McCarty more than any players in the league.

Agree. He followed up that doozy with then sending dan quinn and rod the bod to get ron sutter and murray baron. He made some amends later jettisoning butcher for steve duchesne but listened to brian sutter too much.

Good call. Caron had "too much meat on the burner" with that trade! Didn't understand it then and I still don't. We had a good team, playing well that year, and then bam. If I recall we went on a 6 or 7 game winless streak right afterwards. Never was a fan of Quinn either. I knew he wouldn't have made the trade if he didn't think it was good, but we lost a ton of depth with that trade. It really showed the rest of the year and in the playoffs.

Yeah. Caron literally traded an entire second line. Never seen anything like it since.

Definately Bob Probert. Man I hated/loved that guy. And Phil Esposito who barely made the 80's, if only just to stand in front of the net deflecting shots.
