Would you target Quintin Byfield in a larger trade
Byfield is having a bit of a sophmore slump after coming off of back to back 50+, point seasons hes at 22 pts so far this year. 6'5", 225 lb center $6.25 cap hit with a small signing bonus, very reasonable contract.
LA is very very solid defensively but they cant score goals and may be looking to add more offensive to what they have in Kempe/Fiala. IF the Blues were to move Thomas or Kyrou this may be a guy to target but that being said Byfield is not a known quantity it does carry some risk. What if Byfield doesnt move beyond a 50-60 pt center? Helenius may develop into another nice center for them, Turcotte is more of a 3rd line center. I would assume they would want Thomas in a Byfield deal i dont think Kyrou + is going to get that done
Thomas/Kryou > LA
Byfield/Laferriere/LA 2026 1st round pick > STL
There may be something here between LA and STL just not sure how it would shake out. I doubt LA is coming off of Brandt Clarke I would also be interested in Helenius but not for Thomas, maybe in a Kyrou deal

Really, IF LA wanted Kyrou i would do that deal all day long not sure LA would they would need a center back. Throw in Suter perhaps?

Byfield and Turcotte would both be players that fit the Blues stated age range, but:
- LA isn’t giving up Byfield
- Despite the down year, RT is still the better player

No way LA takes Army's calls if that's the offer.Zizzle1297 wrote: ↑12 Jan 2026 09:54 am Kryou, and kessel

Kyrou for Turcotte and Clark would be overpayment from them, IMHO.
I'm not trading Thomas unless it's for a top 2/3 overall pick that likely eclipses Thomas as a Top 20 Center leaguewide, or Top 50ish player.

Sportsnet pundits are predicting Kyrou waives to allow a trade to LA. If so it is a hockey trade Kyrou straight up for Clarke. At that point Faulk can be dealt. The more interesting proposition is you package both Kyrou and Faulk to LA. I do not want Turcotte and don't know that LA will necessarily give up a a first so readily. Although you are dealing with Ken Holland so who knows.Army's Mom wrote: ↑12 Jan 2026 09:59 amNo way LA takes Army's calls if that's the offer.Zizzle1297 wrote: ↑12 Jan 2026 09:54 am Kryou, and kessel

Helenius would be a very interesting prospect if Army can land him in a Kyrou package. Big, skilled, Scandinavian... could fit in STL. Then maybe he goes to the AHL or would the Blues move on from Suter? Perhaps keeping Schenn in this caseIsDurbanodoingtime wrote: ↑12 Jan 2026 10:39 amSportsnet pundits are predicting Kyrou waives to allow a trade to LA. Re: Would you target Quintin Byfield in a larger trade
Byfield seems like an earlier version of kyrou where a team isn't going to give up on him because of his age. I like Byfield, but it's hardly a "down year" for him. He's on pace for 49 points. That's barely less than what he had the previous 2. He's more under the stagnation department. He's falling into the Barbashev statline where 45-50 is the expected output. Some guys turn the corner tho and explode. I think you could definitely get a phone call going for a change of scenery for both Kyrou and Byfield, but the Blues would have to sweeten the pot because of age and contract cost. Theres a 2 million dollar difference in the contract and 5 years younger. Kyrou has always been a better points producer, but he plays wing. Kyrou and a 2nd could probably get it done. maybe have to add in a body?
All that being said, there are a few teams the Blues should be talking with to make hockey trades. LA, Jets, Senators, Toronto. Every one of those teams needs to make tweaks and or change their runway. Everyone has players that could help someone else out.

Not a chance I'd make that trade. Diminishes the center position, and Kyrou > Laferriere.Harry S Deals wrote: ↑12 Jan 2026 09:21 am Byfield is having a bit of a sophmore slump after coming off of back to back 50+, point seasons hes at 22 pts so far this year. 6'5", 225 lb center $6.25 cap hit with a small signing bonus, very reasonable contract.

(Also, by my math, Byfield's on pace for 49.6 points this season. If he gets a single point in the next game, goes to 50.3)

I would be all in on a kyrou and suter for Byfield.Harry S Deals wrote: ↑12 Jan 2026 09:26 amReally, IF LA wanted Kyrou i would do that deal all day long not sure LA would they would need a center back. Throw in Suter perhaps?

I'm not including Thomas in any deal. Kyrou + for Byfield however I have no problem with.Harry S Deals wrote: ↑12 Jan 2026 09:21 am Byfield is having a bit of a sophmore slump after coming off of back to back 50+, point seasons hes at 22 pts so far this year. 6'5", 225 lb center $6.25 cap hit with a small signing bonus, very reasonable contract.

Need to bear in mind Byfield has been playing behind Kopitar. When he retires at the end of the season I have the feeling Byfield's point totals are going to climb pretty quickly.

Re: Would you target Quintin Byfield in a larger trade
I've heard common wisdom is that players need around 200 games to reach their potential, except very big or small players sometimes need 400. Fwiw, Byfield sits at 303. Maybe he just needs another full season or so under his belt. Combined with Kopitar retiring and Byfield presumably moving up to play with Kempe and Laferriere, next year could be big for him. I assume the Kings know this and would not want to exchange a potential franchise player who makes 6.25M/year for an 8M/year underachiever who might score 40 points if he's lucky.
I don't think any of the trade scenarios involving Kyrou are realistic. He has a NTC and his value is at the lowest of his career anyway.
