Drink has a future as possibly an athletic director or a religious outreach group. He's affable and means well.
But, he just doesn't have what it takes to be a game-day play caller, especially in bowl games.
With this year’s fizzle vs. Virginia, Drink is now 0-3 as playcaller in Mizzou bowl games.
The 2021 Armed Forces Bowl which delivered a 24-22 loss to Army was unbelievable. Brady Cook pops a long TD run in opening series, and then Mizzou has ball at Army 2 ydl a drive later. But, instead of pounding in a running play, Drink calls a goofy flea-flicker pass play that results in a sack, followed by a false start. Result: a chip-shot field goal
.
Then, when Mizzou rallies in the final minute, Drink can’t seem to get the two-point conversion play called until almost delay of game, with hurried snap and blown play.
Coaching point: for a young offense at all levels, have your two-point conversion plays set before the game, from scouting reports: Have one run and one pass scripted, and check down to the play that will work best against defense array.
The 2022 Gasparilla Bowl saw a game between 6-6 Mizzou and a struggling 7-5 Wake Forest team that lost four of its last five games. The QB duel featured five-year Wake starter Sam Hartman vs. MU soph Brady Cook. Defensively, the game featured a depleted Wake secondary vs. a portal-thinned Mizzou pass rush. It was a wild game with 71 offensive plays by Wake and 81 by Mizzou. In second half, Mizzou dink-and-dunk passing and flawed pass blocking left Mizou on short end of 27-17 score. No long Mizzou passes materialized vs the depleted Wake secondary.
In the 2023 Cotton Bowl and the 2024 Music City Bowl, OC Kirby Moore called the plays and Mizzou came up winners in both games. Again, these games featured the two strongest Mizzou offenses in a decade. This past season, Moore fizzled under pressure with a “play not to lose” strategy that clouded four regular-season losses.
In this year’s Gator Bowl, the seeds for defeat were sewn in the 31-17 win over Arkansas. Mizzou took a second half lead and seemed content to run out the clock. Would have been nice to see some short passes to receivers to build confidence in QB Zollars. Instead, we saw 23% of Mizzou’s receiving offense declare for the portal pre-bowl game.
Also, Drink appeared to have no Plan B for second half in Gator Bowl. Maybe some more 12 personnel alignments with two tight ends, who can bolster blocking AND can slip open for passes without getting jostled by smaller DBs. Kept old Plan A – run OT and hope we don’t lose.
Coaching point: Can’t believe Mizzou tolerated a 19-play, 75-yd. drive in 3Q. After the 12th play or so, DC should have called a time out to water the horses, tweak assignments, and get a fresh rush line on the field. This is advice from long-time Centralia, MO HC Gary Miles: best use of time out in football is to disrupt an offensive drive – high probability of turnover or penalty as play resumes.

Now here's a troll who's really working it.
It ignores all the wins and comes with advice from a 2A high school coach.
