Regulation Wins

I just made my first comparison to other teams and it’s amazing that the Blues have more REAL wins than everyone in the Western Conference besides the big 3! Sure they’ve played 1-3 more games than most but that’s still shocking with how many things have gone wrong this season.

Vegas sits first in the Pacific with a 16-6-10 record. The Blues are 2 games under .500 so it’s just feels like a team that is 10 games over would have more right?? NO the Blues have 1 more RW than Vegas!

They have 4 more than the Sharks who are WC2 and 3 more than the Kings who are WC1, yet sit 3 points back of each team.

The season is far from over but man .500 at gimmick time would have put the team in a real solid spot.

The other side of the coin is the Blues have WON games at a 36% clip. They've dug themselves a hole that isn't going to be easy to crawl out of.

There is a huge amount of luck involved in winning OT/SO games and the Blues have had literally zero luck in that department this year.

I have long been an advocate of getting rid of 3 on 3 and shootouts and just ending the game in a tie after a five minute OT. The extra points have badly distorted the standings.

Yet, when the Blues are losing at a tanking rate (albeit unplanned), and playing like a tanker, many see promise and hope and happiness.

We are bottom 3 in the NHL. The only games we will win are those where our goalie outplays the other goalie. Forget OT wins. Forget Shoot-out wins. Our horses run so slow that they fall out of the camera view.

The truth is that all teams win between 40 and 60 percent for the year. Most are right at 50 percent. Every season, almost every team (except maybe a couple) have a "chance" until February.

The Blues have a lousy roster. Just listen to my sock puppet, Army, to find out how good our roster is. Worry about the roster, not how many games out of playoff contention that we are.

You don't tank because you're trying to develop winners, and you don't do that by losing.

The Blues have five starting forwards (out of 12) on IR, half the top-6, and all of the vets not named Faulk are mired in a horrible offensive funk and yet they are treading water. They are doing better than expected under these circumstances. The goaltenders are an integral part of the team, they are expected to contribute.

Probably before this season is over we'll see Snuggerud, Dvorsky, Stenberg, Neighbours, and Holloway all in the lineup together, with Thomas and Kyrou. Toropchenko and Breggren might be in there, too. It's a young core with upside potential if they can stay healthy. Keep in mind the Blues still have all their future first round picks in-hand.

You don't tank because you're trying to develop winners, and you don't do that by losing.

Yes, and your last sentence is very important. The loss of 5-straight First Round picks in the 1990s hurt the Blues for a decade plus. And the various trades of the 1st round picks 13-14 years ago (approximately) also set us back.

That's a little shocking. Well at least our team is good at playing hockey, but once it goes to the arcade games not so much.
