What was your first ballpark experience
Just for hot stove discussion:
Mine was going to a Browns game sitting in the left field bleachers with my dad who was a Browns fan. But my main experience was seeing Stan Musial hitting.
What was yours?

Re: What was your first ballpark experience
September 6 1964 against the Cubs. My grandfather was a trucker in Central Illinois who had Labor Day weekend off. He grabbed me early in the morning when I was seven and we drove what seemed like forever from Springfield IL on old Rte 66 to the game. The old Sportsmans Park might have been a dump but it stills seem like a majestic place in my memories!
Re: What was your first ballpark experience
Going to ebbetts field in Brooklyn to see the cards play the dodgers, and saw stan musial for the first time 1944. Became a Brooklyn Cardinal fan
Re: What was your first ballpark experience
Cards/Cubs at Busch II in 1969. Sat in the loge reserved on the third base side. Cards lost, don't recall the score.
Re: What was your first ballpark experience
[fork] the Cubs!!
Re: What was your first ballpark experience
Sportsmans park 1965. Mets and Cards. Uncle took me. I was 8. I remember them intentionally walking Tim McCarver.

Re: What was your first ballpark experience
Mine was at Crosly Field in Cincinnati against the Cardinals. Red at second, Musial hit a foul ball that landed in my seat and I froze and another kid got it.
Re: What was your first ballpark experience
Busch Stadium II in 1967. I came up with my brother, along with several others. I was amazed at the city and stadium. Both my brother and I had $5 total to spend each. My brother came home with $10. These ladies said that he was so cute, and then they all gave him money. Me? Not so much.
Re: What was your first ballpark experience
1954, Sportsman Park with Mom, Dad and Sister. I was 6. Don't remember who the Cards played.
Re: What was your first ballpark experience
Saturday afternoon, August 17, 1963 Busch Stadium: Cardinals vs Giants, Broglio vs Marichal. Curt Flood hit a 3 run HR off Marichal in the 4th inning to give the Cards a 4-3 lead. They added another run in the 7th, but then in the 8th, Mays and Ed Bailey both hit solo HR to tie the game at 5. IN the top of the 9th Ed Bailey hit a 2 run HR off reliever Bobby Shantz. The Cards tied it back up at 7-7 in the bottom of the 9th on a 2 out 2 run HR by Bill White. Giants did not score in the 10th, but then the Cardinals got a lead off single from Charlie James, who was pinch run for by Gary Kolb. Javier sac bunted him to 2nd, but McCarver fouled out.
I had just turned 8 years old, and my father took me to this game knowing that Musial was playing in his final season. He wanted me to see Stan the Man play. I was rather disappointed when we got to the game and saw that Musial was not in the starting lineup. But here we were in the bottom of the 10th with 2 outs and a man on 2nd, and Musial was announced as the Pinch hitter. He hit a walk off RBI single to LF and we went home happy! Cards 8 - Giants 7.

Re: What was your first ballpark experience
Some of the posters are incorrectly saying their first Cardinal game was at Sportsman's Park but list years in the earl 1960's etc. That is incorrect.
The stadium was orginally Sportsman's Park until August Busch bought the team in 1953 renaming it Busch Stadium that same year .
So if your first Cardinal game was on Grand Ave. in 1953 or later , you went to Busch Stadium NOT Sportsman's Park.
My first game was at Busch Stadium on Grand Ave. when I was 8 years old .. which was 1956 . BTW My dad and uncles did often refer to it as Sportsman's Park as it was called that for so many years.
I do remember a game seeing Stan Musial hit a game winning HR vs Pirates in the bottom of 9th .. 2 outs , 2 strikes on 'The Man' trailing by a run.
Stan hit if over the right field pavillion high screen . In those days, the term 'walk off HR ' was not part of baseball lingo. Fans just called it a game winner back then.
