So the Pirates get Garcia, a 22 year-old right-handed hitting CF who hit .271 (.833ops) with 18 hr 58 rbi during his time at AAA last season. That sure seems like a player that would have fit with us. And they get him for a SP that they really don't need. Good trade for Bucs.

Cooper Criswell just got dropped from the 40 man. Bloom might make a play for him.

If Oviedo the centerpiece it seems like another bad trade for Boston. Or maybe Boston scouts see things no one else sees.

Funny thing is, now matter how many "good trades" the pirates make, it never gets them over the top.

That’s because they don’t have the money to keep players or sign players

its an argument for relegation or even contraction - when there are more franchises than there is money for them to compete. Drop a couple teams down to the minors and leave more talent to spread around to the survivors.

Looking forward to Bloom making his first 5-player deal for the Cardinals !

Would certainly generate a lot of discussion on CT .

Oviedo should be a fairly strong back of the rotation innings eating workhorse with #3 upside.

Maybe. Nothing on his ML resume to suggest that. 4.24 era. Threw 177 innings in 2023. Outside of that, not much there.

Boston must be banking on Oviedo being better when he is one more year removed from the TJ surgery that kept him out for the 2024 season.

The 2022-2023 version of Oviedo had 8.2 K/9, 4.1 BB/9 (still a bit too high), 0.9 HR/9, and a 4.31 FIP. That version would be a solid #4/#5 SP for them.

Poll question:
Who do you think is the better pitcher going forward- Richard Fitts, or Johan Oviedo?

I'd much rather be holding stock in Fitts, who is two years younger, right now.

He’s an absolute hoss. Plus stuff. 4.05 ERA with 7.6 H/9, 0.9 HR/9 in 48 starts for Pittsburgh and entering his age-28 season. He has all the markings of what I suggested.

I’d be pretty confident that it’s Oviedo. I think Fitts is likely to have problems keeping the ball in the yard.
