Cody Ponce

Right-hander Cody Ponce left South Korea this past weekend to travel back to the United States, per a report from Bae Young-Uen of the Korea JoongAng Daily. Ponce and his wife welcomed a daughter in early November and had been planning to remain in South Korea through the end of the year as a result, but interest in the right-hander has picked up enough that he’s traveling back to North America earlier than anticipated (presumably for some in-person meetings).

Interest in the 6’6″ righty indeed appears strong. Ken Rosenthal and Katie Woo of The Athletic reported this morning that Ponce could more than double the $15MM guarantee secured by Erick Fedde in his return to Major League Baseball from the Korea Baseball Organization two offseasons ago. Clubs are generally expecting Ponce to command a three-year contract, per The Athletic report. Fedde’s $15MM guarantee is the largest a North American pitcher has received upon returning from the KBO, so doubling that (or more) would establish a new precedent.

if that's the price tag, he won't be a Cardinal, IMO

I think the Cards aren't in a place where they will have too
many pitchers anytime soon, that could be wrong but if it is
pitching is usually desired everywhere especially cost
controlled.

IDK enough about Ponce. I do think a SP good enough to
sign for 2+ years should be on the Cardinals radar.

Very little in the post suggests why anyone would be interested in him. No age, record, pitch repertoire or stats. More about him and his wife squirting out a kid.

He had one good year last year on KBO at age 31. He's sucked everywhere else

Not to mention, according to other posters, he's 31 yo. Too much money and too old for a rebuilding team.

Stay away from the retreads who had one decent year in Korea. Went down that road already. That is a Johnny bow ties move. He was a putz.

So it sounds like that is trending toward 3 yrs./$30 million ($10 million AAV). The AAV might not be terrible, but probably a year more than the Cardinals would want to go.

“One decent year” being he was the MVP of the KBO.

Wild,
I heard that 2027 would restrict some contracts
not so much so far.

Great. Like Scouty said. Its 1 year. Nothing else has shown him to be that good.
