Re: Bill Cowher sums it up
Cowher isn’t wrong. We see what’s going on in college athletics and where’s this going in 5 years? 10 years? Something has to give. The money involved today is crazy and as we see these coaches hired and new extensions given, it’s not enough.
Coaches are the highest paid employees at these institutions where they work. Kids stay in school because they can make more money than they can outside of school.
Cowher is also right in he nor anyone else knows how to fix this. The NCAA allowed this to happen because of its own greed and now they look for help in the court system which hasn’t done anything but make matters worse.

Re: Bill Cowher sums it up
I've heard Drinkwitz and other college coaches and talking heads speak about this since before the season began and the Kiffen thing was inevitable.
The calendar for the sport is completely out of whack and is among the many things needing to be fixed.
I can't imagine abandoning a program like that and all my players and all that has been shared.
No amount of money would make me do that.
Ole Miss football is king in that state. They would have done anything to keep him.

Re: Bill Cowher sums it up
The fix was easy, just let kids go to the nfl whenever they wanted. There was no legal reason for this restriction.
Re: Bill Cowher sums it up
college football is better than ever imo

Re: Bill Cowher sums it up
How does that fix anything?
Most of these kids aren't ready for the NFL. Team's would still be offering the moon, sun, and stars to sign top-notch, five-star prospects.
Re: Bill Cowher sums it up
Just my experience…
The current system has made me feel detached from the program…
Prior to this system, I felt connected to the roster….
A kid that was highly recruited….following that process..hoping the team gets him , not that hated rival…
and then my team gets him…and then the discussion begins……is he ready to play, or should redshirt…….and then my team feeling that although the current offense is weak…when that kid is ready….lookout…
The team is made up of guys who want to be here …home state or not…
Now…..I watch the games and it’s “who is this guy”. where did he come from…?
Does he care about the team or school….or just the check….well, I know the answer to that…
I watch the games and it’s just a bunch of guys in a helmet I recognize…
I am all for letting these guys earn some money….but this every year free agency has created a team of strangers…
Some guys four teams in four years…?
Really?

So, you're telling me they're not in it for the degree? LOL. I wonder if some of these guys even attend any classes now.45s wrote: ↑02 Dec 2025 10:04 am Just my experience…

Re: Bill Cowher sums it up
I'm fine with the basic premise of NIL and I don't really mind all the moving around. What's good for the goose kind of thing. As for the athletes that come into a program from NIL what I see is pretty much total commitment from day one very similar to a pro who would get traded and still maintain his focus and desire to win. This of course is a general statement that applies to 95% of the players.45s wrote: ↑02 Dec 2025 10:04 am Just my experience…

I do mind dollar inequity between the schools. I do mind the advantage of powerful alums and university's that will have a distinct advantage in their programs and recruiting practices. I do mind under handed tactics that cheat the system.
Somehow someway the powers to be (just who is that is it's own set of problems) have to get this wild west thing under control and bring not just sanity but fairness to the sport itself.
Re: Bill Cowher sums it up
Things need to be gotten under control on the coaching and player front.
Coaches should not be able/allowed to interview during the season. They're under contract and poaching coaches midseason is ridiculous. Need to create a window post CFP for the hiring of coaches. Obviously the Transfer Portal needs to open after that period ends. My punishment for universities tampering with coaches during the season is a ban from the CFP for the duration of that coach's tenure(ie death penalty so don't do it)
Players need to be signing 2-5 year contracts and can't be released from even if the coaches leave. They want to get paid like professionals then they get treated like one. If coach leaves in the NFL it doesn't void player contracts. No more one year deals so players can jump year to year. If you're going into your 4th year you are essentially signing a 2 year contract. All contracts with an out if they go to NFL of course.

Re: Bill Cowher sums it up
There would be no lawsuits against the ncaa because all they'd have to say is "if you wanna get paid, go pro, otherwise you play by our rules".Red Bird Classic wrote: ↑02 Dec 2025 09:38 amHow does that fix anything?

Re: Bill Cowher sums it up
And there was/is no reason for it (other than kids are dumb and think they're going to make in the NFL at 19 and would ruin their chances of every playing sports at the pro level).

Do you really think the NCAA can go back?onemizzou wrote: ↑03 Dec 2025 09:05 amThere would be no lawsuits against the ncaa because all they'd have to say is "if you wanna get paid, go pro, otherwise you play by our rules".Red Bird Classic wrote: ↑02 Dec 2025 09:38 amHow does that fix anything?

Back to real scholars playing football? No more paid players? No more 6, 7, and 8th year players? Players without agents? Players living in dorms like students?
Sounds great. But why stop there? Let's go back to the days when football coaches were paid like professors, when stadiums were old and the best seats were worn benches on the fifty-yard line, when fans and players had a real connection because they were all actually students (or graduates) at the same school.
Frankly, I'm all for it! But how do the schools stick Pandora back into that box?...
If you've got a plain to undo every change that's been made to CF in the last century or so, I'm on board. Really. Seriously. I could not be more serious. If you can think of a way to undo this mess we've created, let me know...
In the meantime, in a world where head coaches are the highest paid workers on the state payroll, where schools spend tens of millions building and improving athletic facilities while classroom space is fought over by departments, where boosters are writing six figure checks to athletic departments, etc. etc.... most people think these (hired gun) players should get something too.
