He was a helluva player and tough as nails.
The closest comparison to an NHL player today is Sam Bennett. Same position and about the same size.
Mel didn't get a ring but had to fight more than Bennett because of the era he played in.
Nothing like 70's and 80's hockey if you liked it rough.

The young guys should do a search on YouTube of Bridgman and watch some of his fights.
He had a great tilt with Bobby Nystrom and other bouts with Terry O'Reilly just to name a few.

Tough SOB to play against. Definitely a crowd favorite in Philly. Didn't realize until today that he was a #1 overall pick in the 1975 draft. My initial reaction was maybe a bit of a disappointment for a #1 overall pick. Then checked out the rest of the draft and the only players that had more career points were Dennis Maruk in Round 2 and Dave Taylor in Round 15. RIP Mel!
