As the Capitals were celebrating on the ice with their captain, Binnington pulled the puck out of the net and, as he skated away from the crease, put it in his pants.
TNT cameras caught the heist on video, and a national television audience immediately got to see where the puck went.
Moments later, Binnington was back in his position. NHL linesman Michel Cormier saw what had transpired and approached him. Cormier and Binnington were seen chatting and Cormier appeared to be asking him to give it back, and eventually he did.
Cormier skated away with the piece of history, which will likely find its way to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Binnington was pulled from the game after giving up four goals on 15 shots and replaced by Joel Hofer.
The goal turned out to be the game winner for the Capitals, which was the 138th of Ovechkin’s career, also a league record.
Capitals goalie Logan Thompson said he didn’t see what Binnington did but gave him the benefit of the doubt.
“I was just so happy ‘O’ got it,” Thompson said. “I don’t know, maybe he was trying to grab it to give it to him. Who knows?”
Binnington was unavailable for comment after the game.

I'll let Binnington know that he can have the puck from Buchnevich's next goal in March.

I love Binnington.
Having a character like Binnington on the team keeps things fun and unpredictable.
In a league that's sometimes too buttoned-up, he brings that edge that gets everyone talking.
Sure, it might ruffle feathers (and yeah, the Blues could use some wins right now), but it's entertaining as hell.

In an otherwise miserable start to the season, a season that is already teetering on a lost cause, this was the highlight of the year bar none. I fear when we look back at the year in April and someone starts one of those "top 3 moments of the year" things, number 1 will be "Binner attempts to steal Ovi's 900th goal puck."

Typical loser St. Louis mentality. Binnington is as classless as the rest of the city. Losers

I thought he was trying to being funny.
He should have had a blues puck in his pants and when they asked him for it , tossed it in the crowd. Then give up the real one to the bench.

Totally agree George. Basically said the same thing in the GDT. Freakin hillarious.George Zipp wrote: ↑06 Nov 2025 07:57 am In an otherwise miserable start to the season, a season that is already teetering on a lost cause, this was the highlight of the year bar none. This wouldn’t bother me and would usually make me chuckle, if Binnington wasnt having one of his disgustingly sheeet years that he’s notorious for after every couple of good seasons. It’s just an unnecessary distraction now.

Jordan just hasn't been the same ever since his twin Bryan Kohberger was sentenced to life in prison. You know what they say about goalies and serial killers....not much difference in the eyes.

Exactly. That's my issue. If you're playing fine and the team's on the right course, it's okay to have a little fun as I'm sure he knew they'd find the puck eventually. There's 100 cameras on the ice at all times. No way does he get away with it. Plus, what's he going to do? Play the rest of the game with a puck impeding his movements?SameOldBlues wrote: ↑06 Nov 2025 10:38 am This wouldn’t bother me and would usually make me chuckle, if Binnington wasnt having one of his disgustingly sheeet years that he’s notorious for after every couple of good seasons. But to follow through on this clearly premeditated plan when you're the worst goalie for the worst team in the NHL. Not a good luck. Read the room, take the temperature, dummy.

On the contrary. It was a brilliant move.SameOldBlues wrote: ↑06 Nov 2025 10:38 am This wouldn’t bother me and would usually make me chuckle, if Binnington wasnt having one of his disgustingly sheeet years that he’s notorious for after every couple of good seasons. Why?
It was a distraction and necessary one. Hopefully it got the guys to laugh about it. Give him some grief in the room. Take the focus off of the loss if only for a short time. Let's be honest, even though that was the second goal of the night, the Blues weren't winning that game. They were a mess in the first and were lucky to get out down only one - Binner was the reason why. The team is tight, they are on their heels, and the team is thinking and hesitating instead of executing. Even a fraction of a second in this league spells disaster.
This isn't on Binnington and Hofer. The skating gaps are getting very wide and they are forcing passes, that lead to turnovers. Busting out of the zone early. They are telegraphing a lot, and just getting away from "meat and potatoes" hockey. They need more guys to play like Neighbors and get their noses dirty and keep it simple.

Yep, definitely seems like someone flunked reading class last night. In the grand scheme of things, the incident probably has zero effect on anything regarding future play, but my problem is the optics of it. Why’s he not angry and piiiizzed like 95% of the fans are? I want to see some fire out of this team, and maybe a tiny hint that they’re not satisfied with the turdburgers they keep delivering night in and night out. I just dont see the humor in it cause of the way the team’s playing.blackinkbiz wrote: ↑06 Nov 2025 10:46 amExactly. That's my issue.
