BB season started

There were some encouraging things happening on the tiny Howard court Monday. Biggest is the Big Dude came to play and was a force which has been needed for years. You can't expect that level of production every game of course but if they do incorporate his alley oops dunks, rebounding and blocks into season good things will happen.

wings made some threes and shot well overall. Troubling repeat of Ant and MM getting into foul trouble, again. but hopefully they were just amped up to play a game that counted. both are way too valuable to be limited by fouls.

Will be good to see how they do when they get into a more competitive team like MN and then rest of preconference. Won't have real idea till they get into conference action.

Mitchell and Robinson had bad games by their standards. We need them both to play at a much higher level for this team to finish in the upper half of the SEC.

That said, Phillips is a very nice surprise. He’s going to be a factor. We might be a decent 3 point shooting team after all (that was feared to be a major issue). And we can get points in a variety of ways. I think we’ll be high scoring again.

Perimeter D is a concern. Hoping Boateng and Pierce are ok and are back on the court ASAP. They’re both going to be difference makers if healthy. Otherwise most of what we have is good. Could be a repeat of last year, only maybe with a deeper post season run.

Phillips feasted upon smaller players in this game, and to some extent in the exhibition game. But he has to learn to not put the ball on the floor with a double team coming. He had 6 turnovers against Howard, and in every one of them he tried to dribble when the defense was collapsing on him. Gates seems to be determined that he be an important feature of the offense, and 6 turnovers a game with the amount of usage he's gotten isn't going to work. He has to learn to make his moves as soon as he gets the ball, and has to see the defense collapsing and kick it out to the open man or a cutter.
