Having a good idea what pitch is coming helps you get a good jump, and some players, like Lou Brock, just knew when the pitcher was going to throw over to 1st base and when he wasn’t. Some players just never learn and don’t have a clue. Unfortunately that’s most of the Cardinal base runners.
