Herrera’s Extra-Inning AB…
…was emblematic of the Cardinals’ offensive issue going back a decade. For all their emphasis on analytics, multiple batting coaches and organizational philosophies, these guys are still deeply entrenched in a no approach grip and rip. They have no strike zone awareness, no plate discipline, no pitch recognition and no situational awareness. Bases loaded nobody out, you DON’T go hacking at the first pitch you see. I’m not saying not to swing at a first pitch, but have a clue. In that situation, the pitcher is looking for a strikeout or ground ball. The hitter HAS to look for something up they can elevate and drive. There was nothing Herrera could do with that pitch last night except for what he did. Hopefully, under Bloom, the Cardinals will find guys who cannot only swing the bat, but know WHEN.

True, but some teams seem to a better job of GETTING those players. The Brewers for instance. Or the Rays.
