The debate always came back to the Cardinals hijacking his development as a starting pitcher when they rushed him to the big league bullpen. He never had a chance to develop into a quality starting pitcher.
Bummer. I wish the young man well. Hicks always struck me as a "thrower", who couldn't outsmart hitters, and didn't change speeds and locations with great command. Physical ability only goes so far. At some point, these young pitchers have to learn how to become unpredictable, with great command. Its a hard job. You don’t develop secondary pitches in the bullpen you rely on your best pitches.
