Why can he not be excused for being a decent and very occasionally dominant number 3 starter? I think he annoys many because they want him so badly to be an ace.

They paid him to be a top of the rotation starter after being the 2nd best pitcher in AL the year before finishing 2nd in Cy Young.

Why the 'no excuses for Gray ' .. Let's look at how he has pitched overall in 2025

Stats and rankings in the N.L.

Ties for 3rd in most wins .. 12
16th in ERA .. (note: with 5 starters per team x 15 teams= 75 pitchers ) 16th is upper 5th
one of only 12 starters with complete game
one of only 7 pitchers with complete game shutout
12th in innings pitched
8th best in strikeouts in the N.L. 168
WHIP walks & hits per inning .. ranks 10th best 1.18

While he has had bumps during the year, his overall rankings have been quite solid. If the Cardinals had 4 other starters who had the numbers of Sonny Gray this year , this team would be in contention for playoff spot IMO.

Yep, because he's being paid "ace-like" salary. That's why he gets no "excuses."

Because the Cardinals have made them their ace. They paid him ace money and refused to go get anybody better.

Agreed he is probably a 2 or a very good 3, but the team has not cast him in that role.

There are only 56 qualifying starting pitchers in MLB and he is 39th in ERA. There are only 17 Qualifying pitchers with a worse ERA. That is in the bottom half of qualifying pitchers for ERA. He has not been the top of the rotation starter this year that they signed him to be.

You said he was an ace a while back.
Now reality has set in dude.
Waste of $25M and next year if he's still here will be $35M

You are trying to put words in my mouth. Have no idea what conversation you are talking about. However a while back with other teams he was an ace. When they signed him he was coming off being second best pitcher in NL and finishing 2nd in ERA. I had concerns with him at that time because he was not one to go deep into games over his career and had several seasons where he would miss a few starts each season. Either way you have a weird way of agreeing with me about his current performance.

That's true.
I agree, that's the main point.

Considering his age and career numbers, no one should’ve expected more top 3 CY finishes. Overpayment is standard in free agency and shouldn’t create unrealistic expectations.

Free agents always get overpaid. It’s the price for poor drafting and development and always will be. You don’t get to enjoy the fruits of others labors when you didn’t handle your own business.

I never liked that signing. But all the others were overpaid that year. If you arent the big $ teams, you have to grow your pitching and fill in the roster with the $ you have. We grew the pitching than gave away a big chunk in bad trades.
