MLB losing quality at the TOP, closer distribution of wins since 2022

Post by Carp4Cy »

in 2022 we had 5 teams with WP% over .600. The average winning % of the top 5 was .640. LAD won 111, and HOU won 106.
in 2025 the top 5 teams are averaging .585. Only 1 team is over .600 and that's a small market MIL. NYY. NYM, and LAD aren't even among the top 5 right now.

.640 to .585 for the top 5 teams is a MASSIVE drop off.

This is completely counter intuitive to what you would expect from the Billion $ franchises gobbling up the top talent. Instead you have a lot more compression at the top with more teams closer in the standings. (also might illustrate how the Cards seem able to beat anyone on any given night, but also able to lose 2 of 3 to the bottom feeders).

Is this good or bad for MLB? No elite teams and the most expensive payrolls not even at the very top, at least for the regular season?
What is causing this? Randomness? Injuries? Money isn't buying 110 wins anymore?
