Tied for most errors at first base in MLB

Can Herrera be taught to play the position?
The unearned run in yesterday's game was the difference in the 2-1 loss to the Pirates.

Heck, we had a potential DP. Should have gotten us out of the inning and a 1-0 win.

I thought everyone was raving about how good he was defensively.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑28 Aug 2025 11:51 am https://www.espn.com/mlb/stats/player/_ ... s/dir/desc

According to Gray after game, Willy turned to throw to 2nd and saw runner was in path of potential throw .hugeCardfan wrote: ↑28 Aug 2025 12:03 pm Heck, we had a potential DP. Should have gotten us out of the inning and a 1-0 win.
Re: Tied for most errors at first base in MLB
The error should have been charged to Gray. E1. Willson's toss hit Gray in the hip and Gray had every opportunity to catch it. He really wasn't paying much attention. That's on Gray. And I like Sonny. But facts matter. Even BT said so.

I have confidence he will fix the problem.

He has been good. Errors happen. I was at a game when a Scott Rolen error cost the game. Players are human.OldRed wrote: ↑28 Aug 2025 12:25 pmI thought everyone was raving about how good he was defensively.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑28 Aug 2025 11:51 am https://www.espn.com/mlb/stats/player/_ ... s/dir/desc

Re: Tied for most errors at first base in MLB
Very poor scorer yesterday. That wasn't Willson's fault on at all. On the very next pitch, he catches a 1 hopper and rifles it to Pages to save a run at HP.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑28 Aug 2025 11:51 am https://www.espn.com/mlb/stats/player/_ ... s/dir/desc

When the first baseman looked to second, Gray dropped his head as he was running to cover the bag and didn’t see Contreras’ underhanded throw.

I see that he's tied for errors with Vlad -- a gold glove winner at 1b.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑28 Aug 2025 11:51 am https://www.espn.com/mlb/stats/player/_ ... s/dir/desc

I remember when dumb STL fans would complain about Mike Schmidt having many more errors than Reitz. They ignored range and the fact that Schmidt fielded over 100 balls per year than the aptly named Zamboni (Kenny had the same range and speed as the ice cleaner). Willson has +5 range and +5 OAA for a guy just learning the position.

Yea you can put a statue player at short who can make all the plays hit right to him but has the range of one step to the right and one step to the left and some people will say wow he’s great defensively he doesn’t have any errors! Other shortstops with a lot of range will sometimes have more errors because they are getting to balls throwing from angles and making players the other guy would never even get close to

+1. That was my point in comparing Schmidt and Reitz.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑28 Aug 2025 15:06 pm Yea you can put a statue player at short who can make all the plays hit right to him but has the range of one step to the right and one step to the left and some people will say wow he’s great defensively he doesn’t have any errors! Ozzie had 25, 20 and 24 errors in his first three seasons- but was the runaway leader in assists.
Re: Tied for most errors at first base in MLB
Number one, there was no way that was going to be a double play. At the most a force out and at the worst hitting the runner and setting up a big inning. The error should have been Grey’s. The throw was good , he just wasn’t awake to catch it. The error actually made no difference. It was the first out, the second would be another ground ball to first. Runners would still be at 2nd and 3rd and would have scored on Phams single. Wilson has been excellent at first base. I have been overjoyed at his work. He has saved Garman about five errors at third alone. The real cause as I have mentioned numerous time was the Cards inability to get a runner home from third with less than 2 outs. Burley just has to hit the ball in the third inning or so and he strikes out stranding the runner on third.

1B is the position where range isn't always ideal to use. Being aware of
where your 2B is positioned, that speed of the batter and the handedness
and speed of the pitcher needs to happen.
Overall pleased with WC. Occasionally he doesn't seem situation aware.
