Inputs:
>cubs didn’t want him
>cubs manager was an mlb catcher and didn’t see WC as a catcher moving forward
>cubs insider reports of breaking iPads and damaging clubhouse regularly
>little to no interest on the free agent market
>never hit 25 HR’s
>likely was not going to stick at the position signed to play, catcher
>doesn’t have the power/bat to justify as free agent signing for DH
>division rival got the younger, better, far cheaper brother who can actually play the position of catcher while providing a better bat.
>he’s been a .240s-.250s hitter through his prime
There’s a universal code, when one division rival wants nothing to do with a player and the other division rival got the younger, better, cheaper version of what you got, it’s a set up for sure failure.
To say WC is the least of the problems because you’ll take his numbers and he’s not the reason this is bad. It’s the pitching. It’s Walker not developing. It’s Noot. It’s whatever else. Yeah, that’s all true and this isn’t about singling out a single reason this has all gone so bad. It’s a very thin level of critical analysis to ignore how devastatingly dumb it was to sign this guy.
I hope for the strong majority of people in Cardinal Nation who applauded this signing and even stuck by it through the transition from catcher to first, stating he would improve his bat without catching duties (didn’t happen), can now be honest about what a mess this is.
A very similar mess to Dexter Fowler, who also wasn’t wanted by the cubs or really anyone else in mlb, much like WC, with a very similar support structure.

If you are going to criticize a player, at least spell his name correctly.

Dexter Fowler WAR on the Cards:
1.7
-1.4
1.5
0.0
Contreras WAR on Cards:
3.3
3
2 so far
Nothing alike, on top of which Contreras has visibly been about the only player who actually cares for the last 3 seasons. Dumb OP.
And I was disappointed in the signing at the time and didn't like Contreras when he first came and at the time I sided with the pitchers and coaches when they humiliated him.

Well, you can't argue with the production. He's been as productive as any player (worth the money) we have, and while his attitude gets in his own way at times there's a lot of other things you can circle as far as what's wrong with this team.

His teammates seem to like him, I've never seen any hint that players are avoiding him in the dugout and on the contrary I've seen a lot of examples of players laughing with him and hugging him.

WC has been an asset in all three years as a Cardinal.
And his move to 1B has been very successful. Plus, he has avoided injury.
Anyone who is comparing WC with Fowler contract or implying that WC is a cancer because the Cubs weren't in a place to give him 80mil, obviously has issues with WC in 'different' ways.

He has been a bigger asset this year. But he not the big bat a good team needs. He would be an excellent #6 hitter with a good team around him.

Let's remember, he's like a 5year/85mil dollar player.
It's not like he's making big bat money...

>This isn’t a hindsight 20-20 situation, all data and info was clear prior to signing.
>If some say it’s 20-20, as in we can now see it was a bad decision, then that contradicts with others who think he was a good signing.
The WC issue is paramount to dividing people that get it and people who don’t.
To understand the WC issue, one has to have the ability to process in layers and from various angles, which most, especially online sports forum users do not possess.
This signing was destined to fail based on two division rivals decisions. It was a waste of money, stealing financial resources from pitching staff. It disrupted development of others, stole DH at-bats and disrupted catching development.
>Unhinged tantrums aren’t the pinnacle of someone ‘caring’. When Yadi snapped, it was usually on deep principle, WC is a near Tommy Pham type snapper. Big difference. If we get off the paper data, one just has to look at WC’s eyes and face and see the issues just as you can see with Pham. There’s a hyper tension and visible IQ limitations, which of course was a key limitation in WC’s ability to be a catcher and manage the pitchers arsenal.
>WC is similar to Fowler as our primary rival wanted nothing to do with either. Neither could field their position. Neither were the bat Cardinals fans hoped for, despite it being obvious prior. Both on 5 year deals. Neither had interest around MLB during free agency. Both were overpays based on market. Neither were tradable during the contract.
Have a great day, all.
