Inane Hump Day Trivia
The Cardinals' last 20-game winner was Adam Wainwright in 2014. Other than the Rockies, who have never had a 20-game winner, three teams have not had a 20-game winner on their staff since the 1980s. A fourth club goes back to the 70s. Can you name the teams, and their last 20-game winner?
Re: Inane Hump Day Trivia
Gotta start with teams that have been pretty bad for most of the last 35-45 years.
Royals come to mind. Saberhagen in the late 80s?
Pirates? No idea who the pitcher would be.
Orioles? Did Mussina get 20 wins in a season in the 90s? I'll guess Palmer in the 80s or late 70s.
Who else? Angels? I don't think Ohtani did it. They had Grienke in the 2010s for a while and Jared Weaver was good for a few years.
It could be the Brewers. I don't think Sheets ever won 20 games, they were terrible in that time. Sabathia was a deadline pick up. I don't think Grienke or what's his face did it in 2011 or 2010. No idea who the last one for them would be though.

Re: Inane Hump Day Trivia
Pure guess:
-Angels back to the 1970's: N. Ryan
-Pirates: S. Blass
-Royals: B. Saberhagen
-Chi Sox: L. Hoyt
-Angels back to the 1970's: N. Ryan
-Pirates: S. Blass
-Royals: B. Saberhagen
-Chi Sox: L. Hoyt
Re: Inane Hump Day Trivia
The Chi Sox had some good teams in the mid 90s, McDowell might have gotten to 20 (unless the strike eliminated that possibility), or one of their SPs from the 2005 championship team at some point in the mid 2000s.rockondlouie wrote: ↑27 Aug 2025 10:41 am Pure guess:

I forgot the Angels were good for a few years in the early 2000s, they might have had a pitcher do it then or at the beginning of Trout's career (Weaver, Grienke), if not Ryan is a lock in the 1970s.

McD did indeed win 20 games in back to back seasons 1992-93 so one wrong for me.
Belive it or not Zack G. never won 20 games but Jered W. did win 20 in 2012 so I struck out on Ryan in the 70's.
Re: Inane Hump Day Trivia
Looks like Colon also won 21 games in 2005 for the Angels. I vaguely remember him on the Angels but didn't remember it was during that time (probably because he wasn't on the 2002 WS winning team).rockondlouie wrote: ↑27 Aug 2025 11:57 amSince we guessed I looked into it:rbirules wrote: ↑27 Aug 2025 11:52 amThe Chi Sox had some good teams in the mid 90s, McDowell might have gotten to 20 (unless the strike eliminated that possibility), or one of their SPs from the 2005 championship team at some point in the mid 2000s.rockondlouie wrote: ↑27 Aug 2025 10:41 am Pure guess:

Edit: The Orioles is one of the other teams. Steve Stone won 25 games in 1980 (so not the 70s team). Mike Flanagan won 23 in 1979, and Palmer won 21 in 1978, so I was close with the Palmer guess.

The Orioles were one of the teams. The Brewers are the other. Their only 20 game winners were Jim Colborn in 1973, Mike Caldwell in 1978, and Teddy Higuera in 1986.
Edit: Saberhagen was the last Royal in 1989.
So the answer is Royals, Orioles, and Brewers, but they all had one in the 80s.
Oops, there's a 4th team that hasn't had one since the 1970s (Orioles just missed). Could it be the Giants? I'm not sure if Lincecum, Cain, or MadBum ever got to 20 wins. Or maybe the Padres, I think Jake Peavy is there only chance in the mid-2000s.

Okay got one Royal/Sabs!

I thought M. Mussina won 20 games for the O's but he topped out at 19 wins twice.
And I thought of the Brewers but couldn't remember if Vuck won 20 for them in 82' when we beat them in the WS (he won 18).
Re: Inane Hump Day Trivia
Here are the answers:
Spoiler
Royals with Saberhagen in 1989.
Brewers with Higuera in 1986.
Orioles with Stone in 1985.
Padres with Perry in 1978 (Peavy had 19 in 2007).

Forgot about Teddy H.
Wow, Pads all the way back to Gaylord P.

I also thought for sure Peavy was a 20 game winner.

Three out of four ain't bad.Rojo Johnson wrote: ↑27 Aug 2025 12:24 pm Who on the Pads won 20 lately? I chose KC, A’s, Orioles and Pads
A's had the big three in the early 2000s. I'm pretty sure they all won 20 games in a season.
Good call on the Pads, took me a while to think of them. Peavy got close with 19 wins in 2007.

Re: Inane Hump Day Trivia
Good question.
A correction: 'Orioles with Stone in 1985' is wrong. Stone won 20 in 1980 and was finished after 1981. Mike Boddicker went 20-11 for the O's in 1984.
