How Many Geeks Do They THINK Attend Games?
They have opted NOT to have the out of town scoreboard in favor of a Geek Board showing advanced metrics. Their own Geek Squad has seen one game between them. Do they think real baseball fans care about the break ratio of some guy’s slider more than what’s happening around baseball. Though it doesn’t matter this year, we’re coming to the point of the season where fans are watching the scoreboard almost as much as the game.

They need an out-of-town scoreboard AND advanced metrics. There's more people interested in advanced metrics than keeping their own score.
This organization erring on the side of modernization is not a bad thing.

Love seeing the advanced metrics. I have a phone I can check scores on.

The majority of fans don’t give two sharts about the exit velocity and launch angle of every single batted ball. Horizontal and vertical break measurements are meaningless to most because they lack any sort of context.desertrat23 wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025 15:41 pm They need an out-of-town scoreboard AND advanced metrics. You sure about that? It's possible that you're viewing it through your own perspective and calling it the "majority." Every ballpark in America has this stuff displayed now, clearly SOMEBODY wants it.An Old Friend wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025 16:39 pmThe majority of fans don’t give two sharts about the exit velocity and launch angle of every single batted ball. What I don't like is the excessive advertisements. Look at a picture of Enron Field when it opened. Look at a picture of it now.
Things that will never happen. Metrics are fine but yes, even as a fan that understands them, when I'm at the game I'd rather Look at pitch speed, how many outs there are, etc... the basics...
Hot zones and spray charts seem relevant too.

Pretty sure about that. Can you point to data that says otherwise?desertrat23 wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025 16:52 pmYou sure about that? I’m a baseball junkie and into analytics… I’ve been to a bunch of games this year. No one I’m with cares about that stuff. No one around us talks about it. The articles I’ve read suggests that it’s only the minority most engaged fans that are into it.

I guess ball parks should consult you before they make any changes to the park lol I don’t mind it the people that want to see it will look at it those that don’t want to see it don’t have to but I guess they will still complain about it even though all they have to do is not look at itAn Old Friend wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025 17:10 pmPretty sure about that. I’m sorry, I didn’t realize I needed to run my opinions by you to see if they were valid or ok to share. I could’ve spared myself your patronizing scrutiny.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025 17:13 pmI guess ball parks should consult you before they make any changes to the park lol I don’t mind it the people that want to see it will look at it those that don’t want to see it don’t have to but I guess they will still complain about it even though all they have to do is not look at itAn Old Friend wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025 17:10 pmPretty sure about that. Casual fans just don’t care about that stuff, and most baseball fans are more casual than advanced analytics enthusiasts.
Re: How Many Geeks Do They THINK Attend Games?
More than a casual follower…
Alvarez hit one measured at 455
Then they told me all about launch angle and velocity…
455 pretty much told me all I needed to know….

Can you point to data that says it’s not needed? No one you’re with cares. Great. All big-league parks and most minor-league ones show this stuff. Seems pretty overwhelming to me.An Old Friend wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025 17:10 pmPretty sure about that. Re: How Many Geeks Do They THINK Attend Games?
I dont attend many games but i like the advanced metrics board. I can see opposing scores very easily just by looking at my phone- as can everyone these ages. Id have to search harder to find the advanced metrics.Red7 wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025 14:46 pm They have opted NOT to have the out of town scoreboard in favor of a Geek Board showing advanced metrics. I didn’t say it’s needed or not. I’m saying that it’s a minority of fans that really care that much about it.desertrat23 wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025 18:10 pmCan you point to data that says it’s not needed? Data? No, I haven’t seen a fan poll or anything for either side. Can you share data that says a majority of fans are interested in it?
I think there is still a large percentage of traditional baseball fans who have no idea how to ascertain what are good / average / poor horizontal and vertical movement characteristics of each pitch type. They don’t know or necessarily care what an optimized launch angle is, or that Jordan Walker hit the ball with exit velocities over 100 MPH 3 times when he went 0-3 on the night.
https://www.statista.com/statistics/147 ... -fans-age/
This shows 48%+ of respondents that attended a game in 2024 were over age 50 and half of those were over 65. Those demos are more traditional in nature.
I’m open minded. Show me why you think I’m wrong other than “I think people like it cause they wouldn’t have it otherwise”.
Re: How Many Geeks Do They THINK Attend Games?
Let’s say Old is right (he’s not) that casual fans don’t care…Are casual fans turned off by them? What’s the downside to displaying them?
