OT: Harper & Goldy - Career Totals

Post by TXCardsFanX »

With Harper hitting 2 mammoth HRs last night, I took a look at his stats for the season & career. Looking at his career totals, it very much reminded me of Goldy’s career. I wouldn’t think these were the most comparable players, but they have strikingly similar career totals.
Goldy: Games Played – 2042, Hits – 2169, Walks – 1081, Strikeouts – 1962, Doubles – 474, Triples – 24, Home Runs – 372, Runs Scored – 1270, RBIs – 1228, Stolen Bases – 174, Overall Slash – 0.288/0.379/0.506/0.885, bWAR – 64, bWAR per 162 games – 5.1
Harper: Games Played – 1750, Hits – 1767, Walks – 1086, Strikeouts – 1624, Doubles – 397, Triples – 24, Home Runs – 357, Runs Scored – 1138, RBIs – 1034, Stolen Bases – 150, Overall Slash – 0.280/0.386/0.521/0.908, bWAR – 53.6, bWAR per 162 games – 5
Harper may not be in the MVP race this year, but he’s still one of the top 15 hitters in MLB. At 32, I could easily see him having another monster year or 2 and maybe even secure a 3rd MVP. I have little doubt he will wind up having an easy first ballot HOF career when it’s over with. I think Goldy gets in the HOF too, but probably not year 1. Looking at their careers side-by-side, I was surprised how similar they matched up!
I will also say this, Goldy’s WAR is more impressive, but is certainly punished by the fact he’s played more 1B than Harper. Goldy doesn’t get as high of a WAR as he probably deserves on the defensive side as the negative adjustment for OF is lower than 1B. Harper was never an elite glove as he rated closer to league average in his better seasons. Goldy has been criminally underrated at 1B in some seasons.
