Two teams in our divsion spend less than the Cardinals and have better records .. Is it more than $$$ spent ?
Most baseball followers know that the Brewers (best record in baseball 78-45 ) rank 23rd in payroll spending $113 M . The Cincinnati Reds are 65-60
ranking 22nd with $119M payroll.
While many posters do not expect the Cardinals to be in the Top 5 payroll teams (LAD, NYM, NNY, Phi, Tor ) , many of those would like to see a substantial increase in payroll.
The Texas Rangers rank 7th $222M and have a sub .500 record 62-63
Atlanta is 9th 56-68 at $213 M
LA Angels are 11th 60-64 and spend $204 M
Arizona DBacks 13th are 60-65 at $177 M
The SF Giants 14th are 60-64 at $174 M
What total $$$ do you feel DeWitt should commit to the Cardinals payroll ? and what win total would you expect for that expenditure ?
Final note: The NYM payroll for 2025 is $339 M and they have won 5 more games than the Cardinals who spent $129 M
ranking 22nd with $119M payroll.

I hear ya, Dan, but I would trade franchises with either one. The malignant elements of the current organization should be gone soon, and the brand will be restored.

To answer question in thread title- isnt that pretty much what bloom said when he got here is that we just didnt have nearly enough minor league instructors or investment in developing our players? And wasnt the focus of these next 2 years supposedly be to start fixing that?ramfandan wrote: ↑18 Aug 2025 15:17 pm Most baseball followers know that the Brewers (best record in baseball 78-45 ) rank 23rd in payroll spending $113 M . Spend smarter. A real issue for Mo.

Drafting and developing is the foundation for sure but when you miss, you pay inflated costs in free agency to compensate, if you want to make a real effort to compete with your rivals who’ve drafted/developed better. So I think both are relevant - payroll and drafting/development

Its more about money well spent. Paying top dollar for average or declining players is Mo's way.

You have to spend to win consistently. The Brewers are riding high right now because of their streak. They aren't that good, no one is. The Cards basically dominated the division for a couple of decades and they didn't do by cutting payroll. Of course there are teams that spend some money and don't spend it wisely. Of course there are injuries and bad performances to factor in. Trying to argue that spending money is a non factor is seriously asinine. It been proven over and over.ramfandan wrote: ↑18 Aug 2025 15:17 pm Most baseball followers know that the Brewers (best record in baseball 78-45 ) rank 23rd in payroll spending $113 M . Competent MLB personnel from FO to coaching staff - those who can walk the walk and talk the talk. Eliminate the as* kissing and knee pad environment. Performance base environment.
Quality over quantity is also a winner.

There are two separate issues you are combining into one. The first is the Brewers and Reds are better run than us. The second is the Brewers and Reds are built for regular season success. These teams rarely go far in the playoffs and the larger spenders crush them.ramfandan wrote: ↑18 Aug 2025 15:17 pm Most baseball followers know that the Brewers (best record in baseball 78-45 ) rank 23rd in payroll spending $113 M . Trying to build what the Brewers and Reds do will help the Cardinals in the Central, it won’t help them come playoff time.

Cardinals management can’t hold the jock strap of Brewer management. That’s a fact.
The Cardinals would need to spend $180 to $200 million to get a quick fix to this mess. $180 is reasonable to think. I’m dreaming at $200.
If these idiots would spend attendance would improve immediately. Enthusiasm would increase for fans and frankly for players and coaches.
We are quickly becoming the Pitt Pirates.

But but but Cards can’t compete with those bad big markets……….this Ownership/FO has been a disaster.Jatalk wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025 09:19 am Cardinals management can’t hold the jock strap of Brewer management. That’s a fact.

Brewers put to bed the insane proposition of requiring 200+mil payroll to compete. Don’t listen to the idiots spouting that here
KNOWING HOW TO WIN…..AND WHAT REAL TALENT LOOKS LIKE….is the dysfunction of this org(MO)

But…..many followers, and some on this board, endorsed those signings..
