Matz Gives up a 2-run HR in the ninth

Post by opti mist »

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox’s bullpen has been among the best in baseball this season, yet this weekend proved forgettable for the relief corps and highlighted a potential weakness for the team as it fights for a postseason spot.

On Saturday, in a 7-2 game, Isaiah Campbell entered in the ninth and gave up three runs, necessitating closer Aroldis Chapman to enter and close out the win.

Chapman, who’d also made 11 pitches on Friday, wasn’t available on Sunday, and his teammates couldn’t pick him up. Greg Weissert gave up a game-tying homer in the ninth and Steven Matz subsequently surrendered a two-run shot, turning a 3-2 Red Sox lead and chance at a series sweep of the Miami Marlins into a 5-3 loss.

So, we have seen Helsley failing with the Mets, Maton failing with the Texans, and now Matz with the Sox. Interesting.

Maybe they were failing here too but no one noticed on a middling team.

Relievers will fail. It happens. They aren't in the Cards and we're better off.

Maton has had 1 bad game in his last 5, and Matz have given up 1 run in his last 5. hardly call that failing. Helsley on the other hand.. ooof

That was matz only run he have up with them and he has 1.42 era with them so far.

Seems kinda silly to already label him failing. He was gonna let in a run at some point again.

Maton and helsley fair enough but this is just [shirt] stirring

Um maton has given up runs in 3 of his last 4 outings. I knownthe one where he got rocked for 4 runs mostly inflates his era but its been more than just 1 bad outing.

Matz i agree. He wasnt gonna be perfect.

It was obviously that Matz and Helsley were not a the top of their game this season. They were traded because they weren't coming back and a team took a chance on them. Don't act like the teams that traded for them didn't know what they were getting and thought they could turn their season around.

Maton is what he is - inconsistent but I think he has pitched pretty good overall this season.
