Rotation

Post by Futuregm2 »

Starters this year

Sonny Gray 4.06 ERA
Matthew Liberatore 4.08 ERA
Michael McGreevy 4.40 ERA
Andre Pallante 4.95 ERA
Miles Mikolas 4.97 ERA
Erick Fedde 5.22 ERA

***Matz had a 1.00 ERA in 2 starts***

I went back to 1940 to check and If things stay the same, it will be the first time in a non-strike season a Cardinals rotation hasn’t had at least one starter with a sub 4 ERA with 5+ starts.

Crazy... great research thanks.

Should be a source of great shame for BDW & Mo, but I know it won't be.

How is this possible with PITCHING being so dominant……and everyone in the league hitting .250???
Doesn’t make any sense……

Our pitchers can’t miss bats and give up lots of hits. Leading to lots of runs.

14 teams have a sub 4 ERA from their SPs. We don’t have a single one below 4.

We have 1 starter with a K/9 above 7. The league average K/9 is 8.2.

We are one of 2 teams with a K/9 below 7.4 from our SPs. Colorado is the other. Ours is 6.85, Colorado’s is 6.00.

21 teams have a sub .250 batting average against from their SPs. Ours is .263, 3rd worst in baseball just ahead of Baltimore (.269) and way ahead of Colorado (.311).

I’m rooting for it. I’m a huge fan of futility. I know if anyone can do it, a staff put together by this FO can do it.

After the 2023 season the idiot Mozeliak’s top-notch minor leagues were so bare of decent starters that he needed to sign 3 just to have a 5-man rotation for 2024.

20 months later we still don’t have a 5-man rotation.

Additional thoughts.

The teams Top 3 SP's of
SG, ML and MG have FIPs of 3.11, 3.75 and 3.42

League average # Pit/GS is 85, only McGreevy and Pallante exceed that with 89 Pitt/GS and 88 Pit/GS.

Quality Starts league average is 34%. SG has 46%, ML 45%, AP 35%
Are there times that even when they are pitching well that they are pulled early?
Are they not being allowed to pitch out of trouble? IMO, the last pitcher that was allowed to on a regular bases was Wainwright.

Blow outs starts, have greater affect on lower IP's the whole RP phenomenon
with era.
Contributing factors are a team that scores 4.31 R/G when league avg is 4.42 R/G.
Difficult to leave pitchers in when a single run means so much.

Starting RS/IP
Miles 2.4
Fedde 2.7
Pallante 3.6
Libs 3.8
Gray 4.8
McG 7.1

Leag avg 4.0 . Little room for error except for SG who avg just 83 Pit/GS and McGreevy
who gets a whopping 7.1 RS/IP.

Cards definitely need more SO/9 just putting out that the process has some
influence.
