There's an Acquisition Anniversary This Week
Now that we are in the dog days of summer, truly the most boring time to be a hockey fan. We have an anniversary to celebrate this week. I will save that day for that specific occurrence for that day. But it got me thinking, what are the most MEMORABLE sports dates for you in terms of acquisitions goes? I would say the criteria would be it illicit such a response that you can remember the time and place you heard the news come down. I am going to open the floor to any sport as long as it is STL related. I have a hard time with the Blues because I think some of the bigger blockbuster deals like Wayne Gretzky, I was a little too young for.
I can remember exactly when the Cardinals traded for Matt Holliday. I was at the Lake of the Ozarks. Very rarely does a lake trip get as much excitement as that trade did to get people back into the building to watch night time baseball.
Anybody else have any fun stories or moments they can remember. Bonus points if it's Blues related.

I was away at college when we traded Mullen and Gilmour.
Dark times indeed. I remember being very happy when we traded Phil Housley for MacInnis. I was p’d when we traded Shanahan. Not that I had anything against Pronger but that it was a 1 for 1 swap. I felt we could/should have gotten more.

and, iirc, we were still paying part of Shanny's salarynetboy65 wrote: ↑10 Aug 2025 11:20 am I was away at college when we traded Mullen and Gilmour.

No offense, but I think you may be incorrect in that one.moose-and-squirrel wrote: ↑10 Aug 2025 11:47 amand, iirc, we were still paying part of Shanny's salarynetboy65 wrote: ↑10 Aug 2025 11:20 am I was away at college when we traded Mullen and Gilmour.

The Blues did not retain any of Shanny’s salary in the deal.
I was so pi55ed when the deal was announced…..in retrospect, it’s the best deal Keenan ever made.
It might be the only good deal that Keenan ever made (I don’t count Gretzky).
Re: There's an Acquisition Anniversary This Week
In hindsight it sure worked out that way. Imagine today if you traded a 50 goal scorer for just a prospect?Bubble4427 wrote: ↑10 Aug 2025 12:16 pmNo offense, but I think you may be incorrect in that one.moose-and-squirrel wrote: ↑10 Aug 2025 11:47 amand, iirc, we were still paying part of Shanny's salarynetboy65 wrote: ↑10 Aug 2025 11:20 am I was away at college when we traded Mullen and Gilmour.

Re: There's an Acquisition Anniversary This Week
The Gilmore & Shanahan trades were, at least in part, necessary to avoid off-ice 'difficulties' of one sort or another. The NHL heisting Stevens away as 'compensation' was always hard to swallow. Keenan was indigestible. Strange era, the early-to-mid 90s, starting with that nutty trade to Vancouver previously mentioned. Keenan, as I recall, single-handedly drove Gretzky away by rescinding an offer on the table. What a psycho.netboy65 wrote: ↑10 Aug 2025 12:31 pmIn hindsight it sure worked out that way. You may be right, but I generally attribute craziness/vindictiveness to Keenan.moose-and-squirrel wrote: ↑10 Aug 2025 15:11 pmmy understanding is it was Quinn who pulled the offer. cant remember whyMikoTython wrote: ↑10 Aug 2025 14:14 pmThe Gilmore & Shanahan trades were, at least in part, necessary to avoid off-ice 'difficulties' of one sort or another. Yeah, Shanny was screwing Janney’s wife, still doesn’t mean we just give him away! anyone else have any fun memories. The one that comes to mind is Paul Kariya. I don't remember a specific but, I remember being hyped. He was one of my favorite NHLers in general at the time.

Re: There's an Acquisition Anniversary This Week
It was Quinn who pulled the offer, after Wayne was -4 in Game 2 of the Detroit series (Det won 8-3). Keenan had enough power at the time that he was obviously involved as well, but yes Quinn was the one specifically to do it. Wayne didn’t like Keenan already but that pretty much sealed it. He was done with the Blues.moose-and-squirrel wrote: ↑10 Aug 2025 15:11 pmmy understanding is it was Quinn who pulled the offer. cant remember whyMikoTython wrote: ↑10 Aug 2025 14:14 pmThe Gilmore & Shanahan trades were, at least in part, necessary to avoid off-ice 'difficulties' of one sort or another. Funny enough, the Canucks tried to strong arm him a bit that summer as well. Gretzky had an agreement with them in place but it was late at night and he said he would sign the next morning. The Canucks owner insisted it get done immediately so they called him back in the middle of the night demanding he sign now. Gretzky went with the Rangers instead.

Re: There's an Acquisition Anniversary This Week
The Brett Hull trade in March of 1988. The football Cardinals had just announced they were moving to Arizona, which would leave a big void in the Fall sports calendar.
The fact that Hull exploded on to the scene at the same time, really put the Blues front and center during those months.
Attendance took off as a result and the late 80' and early 90's is when the baseball Cardinals started their downslide.
So the Blues became front page news and garnered most of the headlines during those years

Re: There's an Acquisition Anniversary This Week
Since we are going with happy memories:
McGwire getting traded here. I was actually watching the game when that was announced.
That trade completely changed the course of the Cardinals history under the DeWitts.
I was at the Hot Shots in South County (I believe) when they announced the Gretzky trade.
I was shopping for fireworks when it came over the radio that we had traded for MacInnis and had just signed Stevens (again)
There was the trade for Marshall Faulk, but didn't see that until later.
It didn't turn out the way I wanted it to but the trade of Doug Weight. Watched him just dominate in Edmonton and then in the first 2 months here he gets the hip injury and is never the same.
