Does Anyone Have Any Concerns About Jim Montgomery’s Playoff Record To Date?

Post by SameOldBlues »

His current playoff record stands at 19-21, and his teams have never made it out of the second round…does that concern anyone at all? Or do you think he’ll have more success the longer he coaches.

Im a huge fan, and as long as he’s able to adjust and learns from past playoff defeats, I think the sky’s the limit, especially as the Blues youngsters start taking on more prominent roles and get some experience under their belts.

It’s not out of the question to start wondering tho if the Blues dont start advancing more in the next few years.

What say you?

Nope, not at all. If at the end of his tenure there are issues, then the Blues will pivot. But the team will be set.

Playoff records for almost all coaches never look good on paper.

Breaking it down he has a lot less playoff head coaching experience than it feels like. We know the 2019 Dallas series and then after that he had 2 seasons of really good regular season numbers that put the expectations way too high in Boston.

It’s crazy that his last full season with Boston was the season before this past one where they were 27 games above .500! That didn’t look like a team on the brink of a partial/full tear down.

Absolutley yes to your question. Before Blues, his 93-point team went 7-6, 135-point team went 3-4 and 109-point team went 6-7.

Absolutely yes to your part in bold.

If he can't teach this team to close out games without having a heart attack then it's time to worry. As of now...nope.

Go look up the best all time for playoff wins.

https://records.nhl.com/records/playoff ... ins-career

Outside of Bowman and Arbour who are top 2, it's generally pretty consistent that their wins outproduce their losses but very slightly in the top 10. Sather at 10 has a stellar record as well. After the top 10, there are a few outliers but nearly everyone on that list including Craig Berube at 34-36 has a .450 to .550 win loss percentage.

Monty at .475 is right in the norms with the top 50 coaches with the most wins of all time. You just hope one of those big runs seasons tilts it in your favor. Nothing to worry about with Monty's playoff record.

Berube’s career playoff win percentage is at .479. Montgomery’s is .475.

Amongst other indicators, having just taken this team to where it was in Manitoba this past May I'd have to say NO.

Paul Maurice is wearing a diamond crown with the world at his feet.

How’d he look 3 years ago when Vegas pummeled him…and prior

Here is the most concerning stat:
Montgomery coached teams are only 2-8 when they have the chance to eliminate an opponent.

The Kyrou Montgomery relationship will be important this year.
