The BIGGEST Talent Evaluation Mistake by the Blues
It is IMPOSSIBLE for a GM to make a big draft mistake when picking after #15 (as I mentioned in the other thread). As such, Armstrong perpetually lives in a world where he is blameless for his draft day selections.
However, it is possible to evaluate the Blues GMs when in comes to talent evaluation, and this is where Army fails miserably.
Consider all of his failures. Which is the biggest?
1. We need a Mikkola, and we gave him away for free (along with Walman and Dunn)
2. We need 200-ft players, and we gave up Bolduc for a project.
3. How many years will it take to replace Petro?
4. Kevin Hayes was a HUGE miscalculation
5. Scott Perunovich was a HUGE miscalculation
6. Adam Jiricek is an injury risk that anyone over 10 could easily see coming. His frame is way too slight.
What is your favorite Army talent evaluation blunder?
My pick is #3

a smell of green grass, look at me, I'm trolling you. Not really, I'm just missing the point of my foe list.
I'm sure this OP was a literary work of genius but alas I would rather rip my toenails out 1 by 1 with a dull red hot spoon than read his drivel. And don't forget to choose your side wisely. Amiright.
Anyway of much more importance for a middle age hippie like myself Dead & CO are playing 3 shows at Golden Gate Park in SF this weekend. Going to Pay per view tonight then hopping on a plane at 6am tomorrow to go tomorrow and sunday night. Thinking about grilling filets tonight, bakers, a ceasar and a good bottle of red. I'll have 4 hours of flights tomorrow to sleep on planes to catch up from tonight and the 430am wakeup tomorrow.
And for those of you not in the know John Mayer has taken over the Jerry Garcia role in the band. When that happened about a decade ago I was of the mind that "really, this guy, who does stupid pop songs and might be best known for banging Taylor Swift, is joining Dead & Co? Well never judge a book by the cover (except the OP, his cover can be judged as deserved) because John Mayer shreds the guitar and his vocals are top notch. The man is a huge talent.
Enjoy your weekend all.

Krug. I swear he got signed because of that 1 hit he did on Thomas during the run. He never lived up to that contract.

Sounds like a great weekend George!! Went to college in upstate NY in the early 80's so got to a lot of shows due to the proximity and the ability to take off and watch a week or so in Albany, Utica, Cuse, Rochester, Buffalo or Portsmouth, Boston, Hartford and into NYC. Great memories if I remember correctly

As to the original poster - just stop with your drivel. You really need help. 99% of the folks who visit this board don't care what you think.

Is Dogtown still around? Used to love going there in the late 80's.

Re: The BIGGEST Talent Evaluation Mistake by the Blues
Agreed. I would add that Krug—or any veteran hire that gies wrong—has large consequences far beyond the 1 player. Sure that veteran can bring a few more wins for a season or two, but at what cost?!!!
- Young prospects are not given a chance (Mikkola)
- Draft picks are not used to fill the position for the long term
- salary cap hit for many years for zero return
- and most importantly, draft position goes from Top5 to #20. So instead of Buuim we have Jiricek

Another OP with an utterly ridiculous premise. I'm old enough to remember when "Nattering nabobs of negativity" became a meme. Not a healthy lifestyle.

We have the day off and are taking our dogs and kayaks out to the Olympic Peninsula for a weekend getaway.
I'll never get over Macho Grande. Those wounds run, pretty deep
Re: The BIGGEST Talent Evaluation Mistake by the Blues
They've already replaced Petro with Parayko. They are struggling to replace the JBo and Parayko 2nd pairing duo. They haven't come close to doing that yet and it's been 5 years.

Re: The BIGGEST Talent Evaluation Mistake by the Blues
Yeah Krug likely goes down as an awful UFA signing, but those first two seasons weren't awful.
He was 32 pts in 51 games his first season and 43 in 64 his second.
I believe it was that second season in the first round of the playoffs where someone took him out at the ankle and that's what triggered and/or accelerated the arthritis in his ankle and he simply wasn't the same since.
We just simply have no idea how long he was playing with that issue and how much it hampered him. If we have a healthy Torey Krug the full 6 seasons, it likely doesn't look nearly as bad.
He'd still be a whipping boy don't get me wrong, but instead of it being a completely negative contract, maybe it's only bad by a million or so a season.

I do not see any talent evaluation that went wrong in Army's tenure, maybe some questionable trades or contracts. He knows talent; he needs to do a better job with contracts.
Re: The BIGGEST Talent Evaluation Mistake by the Blues
Right. It turned out that way for sure, but at the time it wasn’t the worst signing in the world. He was a 50 point defenseman and he was brought in the bolster the offensive output on the blue line.TheJackBurton wrote: ↑01 Aug 2025 10:57 amYeah Krug likely goes down as an awful UFA signing, but those first two seasons weren't awful.

Re: The BIGGEST Talent Evaluation Mistake by the Blues
I'm glad you guys liked the signing at first but I never liked it. Been against it since day 1. I don't like small defenders. I wasnt a Perunovich fan neither. 2019 the Blues had the tallest and most mobile D pairs in the league. It made them hard to play against. Boom boom was the smallest guy and he wasn't small.TheJackBurton wrote: ↑01 Aug 2025 15:49 pmOh I agree.
