Blues Best Draft Pick
Let's keep the general theme going.
Blues Best draft pick?
Thinking hard to beat Gilmour in the 7th round, #134 overall.

Re: Blues Best Draft Pick
Doug Gilmour seems like a really good contender if not the best. Side note: Joe Mullen was signed by the Blues after being undrafted.
Re: Blues Best Draft Pick
It would be awesome if Robert Thomas can climb this list.
Here is my list:
Gilmour
Brind'Amour
Federko
Perron
Pietrangelo
Tarasenko
Cliff Ronning
Oshie
Backes
Parayko

Re: Blues Best Draft Pick
1982 pick #134 – Gilmour
1983 - lol
1984 pick #134 - Ronning
The way both of them left the Blues were each brutal. Just, brutal. IMO it's one of these two guys, or possibly Parayko at #86
Others:
1993 pick #219 - Mike Grier over 1050 games
1992 pick #158 - Ian Laperriere over 1050 games
2003 pick #148 - Lee Stempniak one of my all time favorite players over 900 games
2004 pick #180 - Roman Polak over 800 games
2005 pick #156 - Ryan Reaves over 900 games
1983 - lol
1984 pick #134 - Ronning

Re: Blues Best Draft Pick
This would be Bernie Federko, hands-down. Could be Alex Pietrangelo, or someday Robert Thomas.
As for lower picks, two 3rd rounders stand out: Colton Parayko and Jordan Binnington.
The history of Blues drafts until recently (Army), outside of 1977-79, is outright depressing. Lived through it, which may be a factor in why I'm not a draftnik.

Re: Blues Best Draft Pick
Federko is a strong pick despite him being 7th overall due to all the picks around him. You could argue Brian Sutter was the second best pick in that entire 1976 draft at #20 overall (a second rounder!)

Would tend to lean JB due to round and influence on Cup run.DawgDad wrote: ↑30 Jul 2025 13:32 pm This would be Bernie Federko, hands-down. Could be Alex Pietrangelo, or someday Robert Thomas.

Me too. Especially since it's part of the Chris Pronger trade chain.Sweet Jones wrote: ↑30 Jul 2025 14:17 pm Would tend to lean JB due to round and influence on Cup run.
Hate the trade but love that it played a part in the Blues first Stanley Cup.

Doug Gilmour.
Re: Blues Best Draft Pick
I think Curtis Joseph was an undrafted free agent too.

Re: Blues Best Draft Pick
My only hesitancy on Binnington is I first need to see the best goalie each franchise ever drafted from about spot 80 or later, because my hypothesis is that great NHL goalies rarely are tethered to their draft position, making it less of an achievement to find a stud after pick 80 at some point in your franchise's history. But it's a hypothesis–-I'd have to see the list

No doubt here.......there's all kinds of ways to view this and justify one's pick but for me.....it has to do with the reach and then the results.......it's JB hands downTBone wrote: ↑30 Jul 2025 15:49 pmMe too. Re: Blues Best Draft Pick
Bernie Federko was an awesome pick by the Blues and probably their best ever.
