Cards could choose to re-sign Helsley instead
If Bloom chooses and convinces DeWitt that we are close, he could choose to re-sign Helsley (Who is reportedly opened to an extension and staying) instead of trading him.
I fear Cardstalk would riot if that happens

You can sign him after you trade him too!vegascardsfan5890 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2025 17:29 pm If Bloom chooses and convinces DeWitt that we are close, he could choose to re-sign Helsley (Who is reportedly opened to an extension and staying) instead of trading him.

Closers are bad investments especially if you aren’t a big market teamvegascardsfan5890 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2025 17:29 pm If Bloom chooses and convinces DeWitt that we are close, he could choose to re-sign Helsley (Who is reportedly opened to an extension and staying) instead of trading him.

Zero chance the cardinals sign a 30+yr old close to a long-term deal. And I support them not doing so. The regression is already obvious

Trade him, get the assets now.vegascardsfan5890 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2025 17:29 pm If Bloom chooses and convinces DeWitt that we are close, he could choose to re-sign Helsley (Who is reportedly opened to an extension and staying) instead of trading him.

Then just re-sign him this offseason if the price is right.

Re: Cards could choose to re-sign Helsley instead
As with all things Mo he’s already late on selling. Should have been last season or the offseason
Re: Cards could choose to re-sign Helsley instead
Closer isn't that important right now. No need to spend big $$$ on a position that will have little impact on winning.
Re: Cards could choose to re-sign Helsley instead
The problem with this is that we are not close.vegascardsfan5890 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2025 17:29 pm If Bloom chooses and convinces DeWitt that we are close, he could choose to re-sign Helsley (Who is reportedly opened to an extension and staying) instead of trading him.

Bloom certainly knows this.
2027 at the earliest for contention.
Trade Helsley.

Would be just another BAD decision if they didn't get all they could get for him this week.vegascardsfan5890 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2025 17:29 pm If Bloom chooses and convinces DeWitt that we are close, he could choose to re-sign Helsley (Who is reportedly opened to an extension and staying) instead of trading him.

Why is a closer a bad investment? Seems like a pretty important spot to me.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2025 18:00 pmClosers are bad investments especially if you aren’t a big market teamvegascardsfan5890 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2025 17:29 pm If Bloom chooses and convinces DeWitt that we are close, he could choose to re-sign Helsley (Who is reportedly opened to an extension and staying) instead of trading him.

You trade him for players and THEN sign him this winter as free agents.
Best of both worlds.
Same as Yankees did in 2006 with Chapman ..traded him to Cubs then got him back after season.

Without looking it up....Didn't something similar happen between the Cardinals and John Tudor?rockondlouie wrote: ↑30 Jul 2025 08:51 amTrade him, get the assets now.vegascardsfan5890 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2025 17:29 pm If Bloom chooses and convinces DeWitt that we are close, he could choose to re-sign Helsley (Who is reportedly opened to an extension and staying) instead of trading him.

I didn't remember this so looked it up. He was traded sometime during the 1988 season to the Dodgers and started 9 games but then spent '89 with them too. However, he only pitched 14 innings (3 starts) for them that year, so I assume he was injured.tgharris wrote: ↑30 Jul 2025 09:46 amWithout looking it up....Didn't something similar happen between the Cardinals and John Tudor?rockondlouie wrote: ↑30 Jul 2025 08:51 amTrade him, get the assets now.vegascardsfan5890 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2025 17:29 pm If Bloom chooses and convinces DeWitt that we are close, he could choose to re-sign Helsley (Who is reportedly opened to an extension and staying) instead of trading him.

He then came back to the Cardinals in 1990 and went 12-4, pitching 146 innings with an ERA of 2.40. That was his last season according to the records. So anyway, not quite the same scenario.
