It sounds like the Cardinals are stuck with Gray
This is from mlbtraderumors.com
"The 35-year-old Gray declined to elaborate beyond the mere fact that he and Mozeliak had recently talked about the matter. However, MLB.com’s John Denton reports that during that conversation, the right-hander again conveyed that he prefers to stay in St. Louis — at least for the remainder of the current season. Barring a late change of heart, it seems Gray will remain with the Cardinals for the balance of the regular season."

Then he probably stays for the duration of his contract.
Re: It sounds like the Cardinals are stuck with Gray
Players with NTCs will exercise them. Why is this surprising? I wouldn't want to move to another state again either.
Re: It sounds like the Cardinals are stuck with Gray
It’s not.
He negotiated the NTC for a reason now it seems like he’s exercising it.
What’s the problem?
At least he’s only locked in for one more season.

Problem with some players is they make so much crazy money winning isn’t that much of a priority
Not all, but this feels like it?

If he doesn’t care enough about winning to approve a deal…
He probably doesn’t care about winning in Stl either…
35 mil for a guy that doesn’t care..
There’s a lesson here…

That’s not a bad thing. Solid top 3 starters don’t grow on trees

Who would want to pay Gray $12 million this year and $35 million next year?

Re: It sounds like the Cardinals are stuck with Gray
Denton article seemed to say Sunny indicated ‘at least got the duration of the season’
So he may be willing over the winter meeetingd to. Hav Bloom trade him.
Some players prefer that as they have returned to their home base area. Easier to move to new city for spring training etc to be traded in December to find new housing etc.
Plus smart move by Sonny as he can see who Cards part with on Thursday. He can ride out the final 2 months and then Tell Bloom in offseason he will waive his NTC to right team.
We shall see.

I wonder how many teams will be willing to take on $35 million for a 36 year old pitcher?ramfandan wrote: ↑28 Jul 2025 21:26 pmDenton article seemed to say Sunny indicated ‘at least got the duration of the season’

Without Gray next year they have just Pallante Libertore and McGreevy. What’s the plan for a 1-2? None of those are TOR SP.ramfandan wrote: ↑28 Jul 2025 21:26 pmDenton article seemed to say Sunny indicated ‘at least got the duration of the season’

Re: It sounds like the Cardinals are stuck with Gray
imagine how bad this team would be without SG next year. They already need to get a number two, think they will sign two of those guys if SG is dealt ? Sounds like they are setting up to have nothing going into the CBA but whatever prospects unloading gains. This team could tank until 2028 by playing the market was busy and overpriced after the cba card. What are they planning for next season by trading SG?

Good for us!
We will also need another good starting pitcher next year. Why would we get rid of one?

Maybe his family and children and what’s best for them is most important to him.
But of course you wouldn’t understand that.
