St. Louis Cardinals pitchers once again fail to defend Willson Contreras, the club's de facto spark plug, after being hit once again.

you only retaliate if the batter was hit on purpose. This was an accident.

Yes, Contreras is obviously getting weary of constantly getting hit and pitched up and in. Cardinal pitchers for the most part are very timid about pitching high and tight. I was pleased that Mikolas did pitch up and in and jammed a few Padre hitters last night. I believe that tactic had something to do with his successful 5 IP.

LOL!

It was the 15th hit-by-pitch of the 2025 season for Contreras, which leads the National League. Also mentioned that Contreras was hit twice by Padres pitchers last season (with one of those incidents involving Contreras getting hit on the left hand and being knocked out of play).

He's the only player on the team that plays with any passion. Would be nice to buzz a Padre today.

I don't want Mikolas putting anyone intentionally on base. I already hold my breath on every pitch. Let someone else do it this weekend when one of the teams has a big lead.

It is his team.
Has been for a long time now.
He knows it.
His teammates know it.
Zero need to retaliate for a hitter getting plunked on an elbow pad - particularly when that hitter stands closer to the plate than the vast majority do.
That the reality.
Further, Contreras made his own statement later in the game.
He did not need someone else to do so.
Which is one of the reasons this is his team.

I agree. Retaliation is a losers recipe. The second guy always gets the brunt of the situation. So taking the higher ground is prudent.

If you retaliate you risk getting another one of your players hit by continuous warfare.

The league and umps have a role. Let them handle it if it is deemed excessive.

to your point:

1) both sides got warned. Mikolas plunks someone he gets ejected. they needed his innings last night

2) Mikolas DID pitch up and in on some batters last night. effective wildness

3) best way to get back at the kid was to beat him, which they did

Plunked a MLB best 15 times.

I'm w/OR someone on this staff has to respond or it's going to kept happening until he gets hurt.

He sits alone on an island. Is the issue numerous teams are throwing at him, or is he inducing pitches up and in by his plate posture.

Definitely not his stance, just teams want to take away the inside part of the plate (which is fine).

But NOT when they keep hitting him above the waist.

Too many opportunities for serious injury (wrist, shoulder and of course head if they go that high).

He's the best hitter on the team.

His pitchers need to send a message (which would be heard round the league).

You throw at WillyC, we're throwing the same spot at your best hitter.

This is how MLB teams have policed things for hundreds of years.

I think many of the up and in pitches are a (bleep) shoot as to location. Then add a crowded box you may get knicked more often.

The fact that it’s many teams indicate to me it’s not intentional to hit him but it is part of the pitching strategy to pitch him tight.
